You don't need to go to a gun shop to get your "ninja star" or "Shuriken". A cheaper and safer alternative is to make your own using paper. It's also a fun way to kick back and a good project to do with your kids.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Making a Square of Paper
Step 1. Start with a rectangular sheet of paper
Both plain paper and colored cardstock will work. From this, we need to make a square-shaped sheet of paper. If you are using origami paper that is already square, skip the next two steps.
Step 2. Fold the top right corner diagonally down so that the top of the paper lines up with the left, forming a pointed top left corner
Step 3. Eliminate the excess paper
Cut or tear off the edge very carefully, so that you are left with a square-shaped sheet.
Part 2 of 3: Forming the Various Parts
Step 1. Fold the paper in half
The crease should be parallel to the sides.
Step 2. Cut the square in half to form two equal parts
With a utility knife, the work will be easier.
Step 3. Repeat the process
Now fold vertically, parallel to the sides.
Step 4. Fold the top end diagonally so that the edges are aligned
Step 5. Repeat the procedure
Fold each end of each strip, making sure the folds are oriented as shown.
Step 6. Bend the top diagonally again
You should end up with one large triangle protruding towards you and two small triangles facing away from you.
Step 7. Repeat the operation
Make the same fold for each strip making sure they are oriented in the opposite way, as shown in the figure.
Part 3 of 3: Assemble the Parts
Step 1. Turn only the piece of paper to the left and arrange the two parts as you see in the image
Step 2. Place the right piece on top of the left piece
There should be a square lined up in the center of each piece, but if you still can't find it, don't worry. Just line up the middle parts.
Step 3. Fold the top corner diagonally inwards and slip it into the pocket
Step 4. Fold the bottom corner up diagonally and slip it into the pocket
Step 5. Turn everything around
Step 6. Fold the right corner diagonally as you did before and slip it into the pocket
Step 7. Fold the left (last) corner diagonally and slip it into the last pocket
It might be a bit complicated to be able to insert it.
Step 8. Put masking tape in the center
This prevents the ninja star from falling apart.
Step 9. Have fun with your ninja star
Advice
- Make three or more stars at once and place them on top of each other so that the shapes are almost aligned, but slightly separated. Grab them between your thumb and forefinger and throw them all together by moving your hand from the hip forward, as if throwing a Frisbee.
- Never throw a ninja star in someone's eyes! The ends are pointed!
- Make sure you make neat folds, otherwise the ninja star won't be compact and won't look the way it should.
- If you do the folds right and throw it correctly, the star will fly like the real ones.
- The more precise you are with the cuts and folds, the easier it will be in the end to align everything, so that the corners fit easily into the pockets.
- To make better creases, slide your thumbnail and index finger along the point you want to fold.
- You can decorate the star with glue and glitter, markers etc …
- You can get better results by using newspaper.
- To make this star, scotch tape is not necessary.
- If you push a stick in the center, you can create a decoration.
Warnings
- The edges can be sharp, so keep the star away from small children.
- Be careful when throwing the stars. You may even get hurt.
- Do not throw them at people or animals.
- Be careful when using scissors.
- When you fold, you may be cutting yourself with paper.
