That annoying volume limit set on your iPod keeps you trapped, when would you like to punish your ears with loud music? Do you have very large headphones that need louder audio to sound good? If you know the password, this guide is not necessary, but if you do not have the password or other options, here is an easy way to reset or format the iPod and remove the limit without the need for a password. Note: this solution is not aimed at owners of iPods with natively locked volume (Apple sells low-volume devices in Europe because European law prohibits an output greater than 100dB). This guide only refers to the volume limit set by the user in the iPod settings menu.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Quick fix (all OS)
Step 1. Connect the iPod and open iTunes if it doesn't open by itself
Step 2. Select all songs by pressing Ctrl + A (PC:
Ctrl + A at the same time. Mac: Command + A at the same time).
Step 3. Double click on the songs
Step 4. Click on "Information"
Step 5. Click on “Yes”
Step 6. Click on the “Options” tab
Step 7. Check “Volume Adjustment”
Step 8. Bring the indicator to "+ 100%"
Select OK.
Method 2 of 4: Hidden Folders (Mac)
Step 1. Enable hidden folders
To do this, go to the terminal and run the following commands
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder
. To hide hidden folders again, type.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
killall Finder
Step 2. Open the hidden folder called “iPod_Control” and once opened click on the “Device” folder
Once opened, delete the file called "_volumelocked".
Step 3. Eject the iPod and restart it
To do this, press and hold the center and menu button for at least 6 seconds.
Step 4. Once the iPod has restarted, make sure everything is working as it should
Go to “Settings”, “Volume Limit”. If it asks for the PIN again, something went wrong. Try again.
Method 3 of 4: Hidden Folders (Windows)
Step 1. Enable hidden folders
On Windows Explorer, go to "Tools", "Folder Options". Then, click on the "View" tab and under "Hidden files and folders", click on "Show hidden files and folders".
Step 2. Navigate to "My computer" and double click on the iPod icon
Open the hidden “iPod_Control” folder and once done click on the “Device” folder. Once done, copy the file called "_volumelocked" to a folder on your hard drive and delete the iPod file.
Step 3. Eject the iPod
After that, restart your device. To do this, press and hold the center and menu buttons for at least six seconds. If you have an iPod Nano, hold down the center and menu buttons for about ten seconds.
Step 4. Once the iPod has restarted, make sure that the procedure worked by going to "Settings", "Volume Limit"
If you are asked for a PIN, something went wrong. Follow the procedure again.
Method 4 of 4: Linux
Step 1. Mount the iPod
Once mounted, open the device and press "Alt-." to show hidden folders. The “_volumelocked” file, in fact, could be hidden. Delete it or move it to the trash.
Step 2. Eject the iPod
After that, restart it. You can do this by holding down the center and menu buttons for at least six seconds.
Step 3. Once the iPod has restarted, make sure the procedure worked
Simply go to “Settings”, “Volume Limit”. If you are asked for a PIN, something went wrong. Follow the procedure again.
Warnings
Note that the method doesn't work on all iPods. Not all, in fact, have the file called “_volumelocked” and it is not possible to get a better sound on some iPod gen, for example the iPod 5g 60-80Gb.
- Don't listen to music at a loud volume, otherwise you will permanently damage your hearing.
- Do not delete more files than necessary to avoid device malfunctions.
