When the Safari app crashes, to restore normal operation you can try closing it completely and then restarting it. When the iPad is completely frozen, resetting it is usually the easiest and quickest solution to fix the problem. If the Safari app crashes often, you can try to fix the problem by changing some browser settings.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Restart the Safari App When It Freezes
Step 1. Press the Home button twice consecutively to access the list of recently used applications
This will display a list of all recently used programs, including Safari's.
Step 2. Slide the Safari window thumbnail towards the top of the screen
This will close the relevant application completely allowing you to restart the browser from scratch.
Step 3. If the iPad stops responding and is completely frozen, press and hold the Home and Power buttons
If the Safari app malfunction caused the iOS device to crash completely, you can use this key combination to force it to shut down and restart automatically.
Step 4. Continue holding the Power and Home buttons until the Apple logo appears on the screen
This step may take approximately 10 seconds to complete. The display of the Apple logo on the screen indicates that the iPad is restarting correctly. The startup process may take a couple of minutes to complete.
Step 5. Enter the passcode
When the reboot is complete, you will need to enter the unlock code to access the Home of the device.
Step 6. Try using Safari again
After restoring the normal functioning of the iPad, try to reopen Safari and perform all the operations that caused the previous block.
Part 2 of 2: Troubleshoot Safari
Step 1. Avoid visiting websites that cause the Safari app to crash
This step may seem obvious, but if you have found that your browser freezes only when you access certain websites, the easiest and quickest solution is not to visit them using your iPad. The reason is that sometimes these websites are not optimized for using Safari and iOS devices, which is probably the cause of the problem and which unfortunately is not up to you.
Step 2. Launch the Settings app
If the Safari app keeps crashing at random intervals, regardless of the websites you visit, there are several browser configuration options that, if changed, may be able to solve the problem. All these settings can be changed and managed from the iOS Settings application.
Step 3. Disable Safari Suggestions
Several users have reported problems with this feature of the program. Disabling it could solve the problems that plague Safari:
- Go to the "Safari" section of the Settings app.
- Disable the "Safari Tips" option.
Step 4. Turn off Safari sync with iCloud account
Safari may get stuck trying to sync data with iCloud; disable this feature to stop the synchronization process. This way you will no longer be able to access your iCloud-synced bookmarks and read your "Reading Lists":
- Go to the "iCloud" section of the Settings application.
- Disable the "Safari" option.
Step 5. Clear the data stored by Safari
What causes problems with the normal functioning of the browser may lie in the stored data relating to the old websites you have visited. Try clearing your browsing history and related data to see if the problem goes away:
- Go to the "Safari" section of the Safari app.
- Press the "Clear Website Data and History" button, then confirm your action.
Step 6. Try using a different internet browser
If Safari continues to cause problems, crashing frequently, you can try to fix the situation using a different browser. Chrome and Firefox are two great alternatives, and both programs are available for free through the Apple App Store.
