This article explains how to unlock all the characters available within the Mario Kart Wii game. Mario Kart Wii characters are divided into three weight categories: light, medium and heavy. This aspect determines the type of kart and motorcycle that each character can ride. In addition, the characters are slightly different from each other and you may notice changes in behavior and stats when using the same vehicle with different characters. For example, Baby Mario has statistics that favor him on the weight and handling of the kart compared to the character of Toad. The differences are very small and shouldn't stop you from racing with your favorite characters. You can test these differences by using the same vehicle with different characters.

Advice
- Perform a stunt or vigorously move your Wii wheel at the exact moment the POW block is about to hit the ground for the third time. This way you won't lose speed.
- Use the banana peel to block the red turtle shells that are thrown at you by the opponents following you.
- If you have a green turtle shell, try to line up with the opponent ahead of you before throwing it so you are more likely to hit it.
- Every now and then rotate the camera of the view to frame what is happening around you and be able to identify any shells thrown by your opponents.
- Use snap mushrooms and shells wisely. For example, if you have three snap mushrooms, using them all at the same time will not go faster than using one at a time.
- If you have a snap mushroom available and a thorny blue shell has been thrown at you, you can try to use the snap mushroom with the correct timing to be able to prevent the shell explosion from damaging you (this approach also works using a golden mushroom).
- Always try to protect your back with a shell or one banana in order to be safe from any red shells that you did not see coming.
- Try to take advantage of the shortcuts that are present in all levels of the game to be able to unlock the characters you miss faster and more easily.
- Run against 8 ghosts of the Nintendo staff on the Mario Kart Channel to unlock the Baby Luigi character.
- Always launch i red shells against the people in front of you (unless they are protecting their karts with bananas).
- If you have a Super Mario Galaxy on the console, Rosalind's character will be unlocked immediately.
