This article will teach you how to remove a message from WhatsApp chat or delete an entire conversation.
Steps
Part 1 of 4: Deleting a Single Message
Step 1. Open WhatsApp
The symbol of this application is green: the icon depicts a white telephone that is inside a dialogue bubble.
Step 2. Tap Chat, located at the bottom of the screen (iPhone) or top (Android)
If WhatsApp opens a specific conversation, you first need to go back by tapping the arrow at the top left
Step 3. Tap a conversation, it will open up
Step 4. Tap and hold the message you want to delete
This will open a pop-up bar that presents several options; it can appear directly above the message (iPhone) or at the top of the screen (Android).
Step 5. Tap ►, located on the right side of the pop-up bar
On Android, tap the icon that looks like a garbage can - it's at the top of the screen
Step 6. Tap Delete
This option is located on the far right of the pop-up bar (iPhone) or will appear in a pop-up window (Android).
Tapping "Delete" on Android will permanently remove the message from the conversation
Step 7. Tap the garbage can icon
You will find this option at the bottom left.
You can also select other messages to delete first by tapping them
Step 8. Tap Delete Message, located at the bottom of the screen
This will remove the selected message from the conversation history.
If you need to delete multiple messages, this option will say "Delete [number] messages" instead
Part 2 of 4: Cancel a Conversation
Step 1. Open WhatsApp
It is a green application whose icon depicts a white phone inside a dialogue bubble.
Step 2. Tap Chat, which can be at the bottom of the screen (iPhone) or at the top (Android)
If WhatsApp opens a specific conversation, first go back by tapping the arrow at the top left
Step 3. Tap Edit, located at the top left
On Android you can skip this step
Step 4. Tap a conversation to select it
- On Android, tap on the conversation and hold it.
- You cannot delete group chats using this method.
Step 5. Tap Delete, located at the bottom right
On Android, tap the trash can icon at the top of the screen
Step 6. Tap Delete Chats
This option will appear at the bottom of the screen and will remove the conversation from the "Chat" page.
On Android, this option is simply referred to as the word "Delete"
Part 3 of 4: Delete All Conversations
Step 1. Open WhatsApp
It is a green application whose icon depicts a white phone inside a dialogue bubble.
Step 2. Tap Settings, located at the bottom right
- On Android, tap ⋮ and then "Settings".
- If WhatsApp opens a specific conversation, first go back by tapping the arrow at the top left.
Step 3. Tap Chat, which is located in the center of the screen
Step 4. Tap Clear All Chats, which is towards the bottom of the screen
If you want to keep the conversations but remove all messages within them, tap "Delete all chats" instead
Step 5. Enter your phone number in the field located towards the center of the screen
On Android you may not have this option
Step 6. Tap Clear All Chats
This will remove all conversations from the "Chat" page, as long as they are not group.
If you select "Delete all chats", you will continue to have the conversations listed on the "Chats" page, but they will not include any messages
Part 4 of 4: Leaving a Group Chat
Step 1. Open WhatsApp
It is a green application whose icon depicts a white phone inside a dialogue bubble.
Step 2. Tap Chat, located at the bottom of the screen (iPhone) or top (Android)
If WhatsApp opens a specific conversation, first go back by tapping the arrow at the top left
Step 3. Tap a group conversation
You may have to scroll down the page to find it, it all depends on the last time you joined the conversation.
Step 4. Tap the group name
It is located in the upper left, directly below the arrow that allows you to go back.
Step 5. Scroll and tap Leave Group
This button is located at the bottom of the page. This way you will unsubscribe and the group will be deleted from the "Chat" page.
