Store-bought hair clips are often extremely expensive, especially considering they are simple hair accessories for girls. So why not start a fun project like making your own hair clips? All you need is a few DIY accessories, such as ribbons, glue, needle and thread. Read below to get started right away.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Create a Simple Hair Clip
Step 1. Collect everything you need
For this simple hair clip you will need: some ribbon, needle and thread, hot glue and a bar base for hair clips.
- If you are making the hair clip just for fun, don't worry about the length of the ribbon.
- However, if you need to make a hair clip of a specific length, you should cut the ribbon by measuring twice the length of the bar plus another couple of centimeters.
- For example, if you want a 5cm clip, you need to measure 10cm, plus an extra 2cm (to allow for overlap).
Step 2. Make a ring
Fold the ribbon to join the two ends overlapping them by about an inch. Make sure the straight side of the ribbon is on the outside of the newly formed ring. (especially if the ribbon has a print or decoration).
Step 3. Pass the needle with the thread in the middle
Squeeze the ribbon in the center to flatten the ring. Thread the needle back through the center, from the back to the straight side.
Step 4. Roll the yarn around
Squeeze the center of the accordion bow. Then wind the thread several times to stop it. Finally, tie the thread and cut off the excess.
Step 5. Add a node in the center
Take a second piece of ribbon and tie a simple knot. tie the knot in the center of the bow, then secure the ends at the back with a small stitch or glue.
Step 6. Glue the bow to the barrette
Put some hot glue on the bar, then glue the bow so that it sits tight. Let it dry for an hour before using.
Step 7. Add a finishing touch
If you like, you can add other decorations to your hair clip. Use hot glue to add sequins or try glitter for fabric.
You can also create a layered bow by overlapping two ribbons of contrasting colors. Put the two bows on top of each other, add the central knot to stop them both and then glue them on the barrette
Method 2 of 2: Create a layered hair clip
Step 1. Get what you need
To make a layered hair clip you will need three ribbons of matching colors or patterns. One ribbon will be used for the "main bow", so it will need to be a little wider than the other two. You will also need a hot glue gun, needle and thread, a thread with a knot at the bottom, scissors, a special glue for the edges of the fabrics and a base for a hair clip.
Step 2. Make the rings
Take the wider ribbon and wrap it in a circle, as you do with shoelaces to tie them.
- This first ring determines the final size of the clasp, so adjust it until it reaches the size you want. If you are using a patterned ribbon, check that the pattern itself is on the outside.
- Keeping the first loop between your thumb and forefinger, make another loop by wrapping the ribbon from the opposite side. You should find yourself holding a bow shape.
- Make a third and fourth loops, using the same technique. The fourth loop should join the center of the bow (from left to right), protruding a little to form the second end of the bow.
- At this point check that the four rings are the same size and modify them if necessary.
Step 3. Stop with needle and thread
Hold the bow firmly with your thumb and forefinger and sew the center with needle and thread, starting from the back.
- Make a few stitches in the center to secure the bow well. It doesn't matter if the stitches aren't accurate, you won't see them again when the bow is done. Knot the yarn at the back and cut the remaining one.
- If one end of the staple is still attached to the bobbin, cut it off. Keep the ends long for now, you will cut them to the length you want in the end.
Step 4. Make a second and third bow
Take the other two thinner ribbons and repeat the same steps to create two more bows.
Try to make these two bows slightly smaller than the first one, as you will have to overlap them
Step 5. Put the bows together
Take the larger bow and place the other two on it, aligning the sewn central parts.
- Take needle and thread and sew the three centers together. Make several stitches to lock the three bows together well.
- After a few stitches, take the yarn and wrap it around the center of the bow several times. Squeeze well to stop the center well.
- You may need to arrange the rings and ends so you have them in the right position.
- After wrapping the thread several times around the center, knot it at the back and cut away the one you don't need.
Step 6. Tie the center knot and glue it onto the bar
Take a new piece of ribbon (any of the three you've already used) and tie a simple knot. Arrange it so that the straight side is on the outside.
- Line up the knot in the center of the bow. So you will cover all the messy spots you did before!
- Flip the bow over and use the gun to put a drop of glue on the back. Take the bar, place the top half on the bow and squeeze firmly to glue the two parts together.
- Take one end of the knotted ribbon and pass it through the open bar. Squeeze it well to glue the bow well. Cut off the excess tape.
- Put a dab of glue on the end you just used, then take the other end and glue it firmly. Cut away what is left over.
- The bow is now firmly attached to the bar.
Step 7. Trim the ends of the bows
Turn the hair clip over so that the straight part is at the top. With scissors cut the six ends.
- The simplest way is to cut the ends at an angle, starting from the outside. You decide the length you prefer.
- The last step is to take a bottle of glue suitable for the edges of the fabrics and pass a small amount of product on the ends of the bow so that they do not fray.
Advice
- If you want the bar to match the bow, cover it by gluing a little ribbon along the entire length before gluing the bow.
- You can also use these bows to decorate gift packages. Y
