This article explains how to change the route on Google Maps using an iPhone or iPad. By changing the destination, following alternative routes, adding stages and avoiding tolls or motorways, it is possible to alter the route on this application.
Steps
Part 1 of 4: Changing the Destination
Step 1. Open Google Maps
The icon looks like a map, a red pin and a "G".
Download Google Maps from the App Store and log in with your Google account if you haven't already. Make sure the location service is turned on
Step 2. Select a destination on the map
Tap a location on the map or search for one by typing its name or address in the search bar at the top of the screen.
Step 3. Tap Start
This will start navigating the route.
Step 4. Tap Sign Out
It is a red button located at the bottom right.
Step 5. Select a new destination on the map
Tap a place on the map or search for one by typing its name or address in the search bar at the top of the screen.
Step 6. Tap Start
This will restart navigation to the new address.
Part 2 of 4: Taking an Alternative Route
Step 1. Select a destination on the map
Tap a location on the map or search for one by typing its name or address in the search bar at the top of the screen.
Step 2. Tap Start to start the route
Tap the blue button at the bottom left to start browsing.
Step 3. Tap a gray alternate route
Alternative routes are colored gray on the map and often show a different estimated time of arrival than the main route. Tap the gray path to take an alternative route.
Part 3 of 4: Adding a Stage
Step 1. While browsing, tap
On the route, tap the magnifying glass icon in the top right.
Step 2. Tap a category or
You can tap any of the options shown to see the places on your route. If you're looking for a place that doesn't fall into these categories, you can tap the microphone icon to perform a voice search or the magnifying glass button at the bottom of the menu to type a name.
Step 3. Select the stop you want to add
On the map or in the search results, tap the destination you want to add to the route.
Step 4. Tap Add Waypoint
It's a green button at the bottom of the screen. Allows you to add the stop to the route, modifying the current route and the estimated time of arrival.
Part 4 of 4: Avoiding Tolls, Ferries and Highways
Step 1. Select a destination on the map
Tap a place on the map or search for one by typing the name or address in the search bar at the top of the screen.
Step 2. Tap Directions
It is a blue button located at the bottom right.
Step 3. Tap ⋯
This icon has three horizontal dots and is located at the top right.
Step 4. Tap Route Options
It's almost at the bottom of the pop-up menu, next to an icon that looks like three lines.
Step 5. Tap the button for each item you want to avoid
Once activated, the button will turn blue. These options allow you to avoid motorways, tolls and ferries.
