This article shows you how to change or reset your Gmail account login password. You can perform the procedure described in the article using a computer, iPhone or Android device. If you have forgotten your password, you can use the Google form to set a new one.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Desktop and Laptop Computers
Step 1. Log in to your Gmail inbox
Type the following URL https://www.gmail.com/ into the browser address bar. If you are already logged in with your Google account, you will be redirected directly to your inbox.
- If you are not logged in yet, you will need to do so now by providing your e-mail address and security password.
- If you've forgotten your Gmail account login password, you'll need to set a new one.
Step 2. Click the "Settings" icon
It features a gear icon and is located at the top right of the Gmail interface. A drop-down menu will appear.
Step 3. Choose the Settings option
It is one of the items listed in the menu that appeared. The Gmail configuration settings section will appear.
Step 4. Go to the Accounts and Import tab
It's located at the top of the pane where Gmail's configuration settings appeared.
Step 5. Click the Change Password link
It is located within the "Edit Account Settings" section of the page.
Step 6. Enter the current Gmail security password
This is the security password currently set for your Google account. Type in the text field located in the center of the new tab that appears.
Step 7. Press the Next button
It is placed at the bottom of the page. You will be redirected to the Gmail password change form.
Step 8. Enter the new password you have chosen
Type it in the "New password" text field, then enter it a second time in the "Confirm new password" field.
Step 9. Press the Change Password button
It is blue in color and is positioned at the bottom of the page. In this way the new password entered will be saved and activated.
Method 2 of 4: iPhone
Step 1. Launch the Gmail app
Tap the Gmail icon, which features a white envelope with a red "M" on it. If you are already signed in with your Google account, your inbox will appear.
- If you are not logged in yet, you will need to log in now by providing your email address and security password.
- If you have forgotten your Gmail account login password, you will need to set a new one.
Step 2. Press the ☰ button
It is located in the upper left corner of the screen. The main drop-down menu of the application will be displayed.
Step 3. Scroll through the list of options to select the Settings item
It is located at the bottom of the menu that appeared.
Step 4. Select your account
Tap the name of the user profile you want to change the security password to.
Step 5. Tap the Manage Accounts option
It is located at the top of the page.
Step 6. Choose the Login and Security item
It is visible at the top of the screen.
Step 7. Tap the Password option
It is located at the top of the screen. The login panel will appear.
Step 8. Enter the security password
Tap the text field that appeared in the center of the screen, then type in your current Gmail account password.
Step 9. Press the Login button
It is placed below the text field you used to enter the password.
Step 10. Enter the new password you have chosen
Type it in the "New password" text field, then enter it a second time in the "Confirm new password" field.
Step 11. Press the Change Password button
It is blue in color and is located at the bottom of the screen. This way the new password entered will be saved and activated.
Method 3 of 4: Android devices
Step 1. Enter the Settings menu of your Android device
Open the notification bar by sliding your finger down on the screen, starting from the top, and then tap the "Settings" icon
in the shape of a gear located in the upper right corner of the screen.
If you've forgotten your Gmail account login password, you'll need to set a new one
Step 2. Scroll through the menu that appeared to locate and select the Google option
It is located at the bottom of the "Settings" menu.
Step 3. Choose the Google Account item
It is located at the top of the screen. Your Google account page will appear.
Step 4. Select the account you want to use
If you want to change the password of a Google account that is not currently selected, tap the email address visible at the top of the screen, then choose one of the profiles listed in the "Choose an account" section.
Step 5. Go to the Security tab
It is located at the top of the screen.
Step 6. Tap the Password item
It is visible in the "Google Login" section at the top of the "Security" tab.
Step 7. Enter the login password
Type in the current security password you use to log into your Google account.
Step 8. Press the Next button
It is located at the bottom of the password change form.
Step 9. Enter the new password you have chosen
Type it in the "New password" text field, then enter it a second time in the "Confirm new password" field.
Step 10. Press the Change Password button
It is blue in color and is located at the bottom of the screen. This way the new password entered will be saved and activated.
Method 4 of 4: Reset a Forgotten Password
Step 1. Go to the "Account Recovery" page
Type the URL https://accounts.google.com/signin/recovery into the address bar of the browser.
If you are using a smartphone or tablet you will need to use the internet browser of the mobile device
Step 2. Enter the email address associated with your Google account
Type it in the text field that appeared in the center of the page.
Step 3. Press the Next button
It is placed at the bottom of the page.
Step 4. Choose the Try another method option twice
It's a blue link at the bottom left of the page or screen.
Step 5. Select the Message method
It is located at the bottom of the page or screen. This will send you a verification code to the phone number associated with your Gmail account.
- Alternatively, you can choose to verify your identity through a phone call.
- You may need to confirm the telephone number provided by typing it again in the text field at the bottom of the form and then pressing the button Come on.
Step 6. Retrieve the verification code
Launch the smartphone app you use to manage SMS, select the text message you just received from Google and take note of the 6-digit numeric code in the message.
If you have chosen to be contacted by phone, answer the call you will receive and take note of the numeric code that will be provided to you by the auto attendant
Step 7. Use the 6-digit verification code you received
Type it in the text field in the center of the browser page and press the button Come on.
Step 8. Enter the new password
Type in the text field at the top of the page, then enter it a second time using the field at the bottom. This step is used to verify the correctness of the password entered.
Step 9. Press the Change Password button
It is blue in color and is positioned at the bottom of the page. This way the new password entered will be saved and activated.
Advice
- It is advisable to have a second email account to connect to that of Gmail, to be able to use it in case you need to reset or recover your password in case you forget it.
- If the old Gmail password is stored in the browser you usually use to access the web and you have not yet replaced it with the new one, go to the "Password" section of the browser settings and delete any entry related to Gmail or Google. At this point, after the next login to Gmail, you should be able to save the new password.
