Making sure your accounts are secure is critical to internet security and privacy. Many companies do what they can to help users keep their accounts safe. One of the most popular email providers, Gmail, has password recovery options that ensure your account is protected. Setting up these options only takes a couple of minutes and can make your account much more secure.
Steps
Step 1. Open a browser and go to gmail.com
Step 2. Log in
Enter your username and password in the text entry fields to access your account.
Step 3. Go to "Settings"
On the main Gmail page, look to the right and you'll see a gear icon indicating settings. Click on "Settings" to open a new window.
Step 4. Click on "Accounts and Import"
In the settings you will see several subsections at the top of the page. The fourth entry is "Account and Import". Click on the subsection to view the options for that area.
The first option is "Change account settings" followed by three blue links. The second is "Change password recovery options". Click on this item to continue
Step 5. Verify your account
Enter your password and verify your account. This security measure protects you by making sure that no one else can access your sensitive information. When you are done, click on "Register".
Step 6. Change two different password recovery options
- The first choice is to add a phone number to confirm that this is you. Add a phone number, click on "Add phone" which will activate two other options. The first thing you will need to do is click on the drop-down menu under "Country" and select your country. Below you will see a box where you can enter your phone number.
- You can also recover your gmail account by entering a recovery email address. To do this, click on "Add e-mail"; a new box will appear, click on it and enter the email you want to use.
- If you want to add more than one recovery email address, you can do so by clicking on the "Add alternative address" button. A box will appear where you can click and add an additional email address.
Step 7. Save your changes
When you are done check the information entered a second time. If you are sure that everything is fine, you can save your changes by clicking on the "Save" button at the bottom of the page.
