To change the password for accessing a Wi-Fi network managed by a D-Link router, you need to access the device configuration web page using any internet browser. After logging in to the page using the correct credentials, you can change the password of your Wi-Fi network in a few simple steps using the "Wireless Settings" menu.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Log in to the Router
Step 1. Start the internet browser on one of the devices connected to the Wi-Fi network managed by the router in question
In order to perform the procedure described in this article, it is essential that the device with which you want to access the configuration page of your D-Link router is connected to its LAN. It is best to use a computer connected directly to the router via an Ethernet cable, as if connected wirelessly, the connection with the device would be lost when the new configuration changes are applied.
Step 2. Type the IP address
192.168.0.1 inside the address bar of the internet browser.
This is the default network address used by all D-Link routers.
Step 3. If the previous step was unsuccessful, try using the IP address
192.168.1.1. This is another IP address commonly used as a network address for home routers.
Step 4. If both of the above steps failed, use the following URL
dlinkrouter. This is an internet address that should work when using most modern D-Link routers.
Step 5. If you are still unable to establish a connection to the router, find its current network address
If you are unable to access the router's web interface to log in, you can find its IP address using your computer and following these instructions:
- Windows systems: select the network connection icon, located in the notification area of the taskbar, with the right mouse button. Choose the "Open Network and Sharing Center" option. Select the link, located in the "Connections:" field, relating to the current active network connection. It is located at the top of the window. Press the "Details …" button in the new window that appears. Copy the network address listed under "IPv4 Default Gateway". This is the IP address currently used by the router that manages the LAN to which you are connected.
- OS X or macOS systems: Go to the "Apple" menu, then choose the "System Preferences" option. Select the "Network" icon in the new window that appears. Click the currently active network connection, then press the "Advanced …" button. Access the "TCP / IP" tab and copy the IP address listed under "Router".
Part 2 of 3: Log in
Step 1. Use the admin account as the username to login
This is the username most commonly used by D-Link routers as the default administration account.
Step 2. Leave the password field blank
By default, many D-Link routers do not protect access to the administrative web console with a password.
Step 3. Try to use the admin password
If the previous login attempt failed, try using the word "admin" as the password (without quotes).
Step 4. Search using your D-Link router model to find default login credentials
If you were unable to log in using the username "admin" and without using any password, log into the website www.routerpasswords.com, then select the "D-Link" option from the menu. Find the model of your router in the list that appears, then try to log in to the configuration page using the username and password indicated.
Step 5. If you are unable to log in, press and hold the "Reset" button on the back of the router
If none of the usernames and passwords provided in the previous steps allow you to log into your D-Link router's configuration page, press and hold the device's "Reset" button for approximately 30 seconds. In this way, the router will be restarted (the process will take a few minutes) and the default login credentials set by the manufacturer will be restored.
Part 3 of 3: Change the Wi-Fi Network Password
Step 1. Go to the Wireless tab
If this section of the router configuration page is not present, go to the "Settings" tab, then choose the "Wireless Settings" option located in the left menu.
Step 2. Enter the Wireless Security Mode menu
Step 3. Choose the Enable WEP Wireless Security (basic) option
If outdated devices that do not support the WPA2 security protocol are not to be connected to your LAN, it is important to always choose the data encryption method indicated. This is the safest tool you have available to protect your network.
Step 4. Click inside the Network key field
Step 5. Type in the password you wish to use to log into your wireless LAN network
Make sure it's sturdy, doesn't contain any meaningful words, and isn't easy to guess. This precaution is very important especially in the case of LAN networks installed in very busy areas (public places, shopping centers, etc.).
Step 6. Retype the password in the Confirm Network Key field
Step 7. When finished, press the Save Settings button to save the new changes
Step 8. Enter the new Wi-Fi network login password on all wireless devices you wish to connect
Now that your wireless network password has been changed, you need to reconnect all devices using the new login credentials.
