Are you excited about the idea of making a lipstick with your own hands? You probably already have all the ingredients in the house. Creating your own lipstick can reduce make-up costs and make it in colors that no one else has ever worn before. Here's how to make lipstick using natural products, eye shadows and wax crayons and get the color of your choice.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Using Natural Products
Step 1. Create the base for the lipstick
The bases contain almost all the ingredients of a lipstick and you can customize them with your favorite colors. You can change the ingredients of the base to make the lipstick more shiny, matte or moisturizing. Here's what you'll need:
- 5 grams (or 1 teaspoon) of beeswax. You can find it in herbalists and beekeepers.
- 5 grams (or 1 teaspoon) of shea, mango, almond or avocado butter. It will make the lipstick easier to apply.
- 5 grams (or 1 teaspoon) of oil, such as almond or jojoba or extra virgin olive oil.
Step 2. Choose the color of the lipstick
Now that you have what you need for the base, the next step is to make the color. You can use many natural substances for red, pink, brown and orange shades. Remember that this is a natural recipe, so the final color will also depend on your skin tone. Here are some suggestions:
- For a bright red, use beetroot powder.
- Cinnamon produces a red-brown color.
- Turmeric added to other powders gives it coppery reflections.
- Cocoa gives it a dark brown color.
Step 3. Combine the ingredients of the base all together
Put them in a microwave-safe bowl and put the timer on for no more than 30 seconds at a time, until they are completely melted. Stir them to blend the mixture.
Note that it is also possible to dissolve the ingredients in a double boiler. Heat about 5cm of water in a large saucepan over medium-high heat, then add the ingredients to a smaller pan placed inside the first one. Keep stirring until everything is melted and melted together
Step 4. Merge the color
Now comes the fun part. Add a teaspoon of the natural powder you want to use. Put more powder for a more intense color. Mix everything and continue adding powder a little at a time until you find the desired shade.
Step 5. Pour the mixture into a container
You can use an old lipstick tube, a small cosmetic jar, or any container that has a lid. Let the lipstick harden at room temperature or refrigerate it before using.
Method 2 of 4: Using Eyeshadow
Step 1. Get a ready-made eyeshadow
Find an old one (or buy a new one), both compact and powdered ones are fine, avoid gel ones. Pour it into a bowl and with the handle of a spoon pound it until you have reduced it to a fine powder without lumps.
- To give the lipstick shine, add a little golden eyeshadow to the color of your choice.
- With eyeshadows you can experiment with new and interesting color mixes. Green, blue, black and all the other colors that are hard to find in lipsticks.
- Be careful: some eyeshadows are not safe for use on the lips. Check the ingredients carefully: if the eyeshadow includes ultramarine blue, ferric ferrocyanide and / or chromium oxides, do not use them. Use only eyeshadows containing safe iron oxides.
Step 2. Combine the eyeshadow with the petroleum jelly
Place a tablespoon of petroleum jelly in a microwave-safe bowl, add a teaspoon of eyeshadow and heat until it melts and becomes liquid, then stir to distribute the color well.
- Add more eyeshadow if you want a deeper color.
- Put less eyeshadow if you prefer a lip gloss.
- Instead of petroleum jelly you can use lip balm.
Step 3. Pour the mixture into the containers
Use an old lipstick or lip gloss tube, a cosmetic jar, or any container that has a lid. Let it harden before using.
Method 3 of 4: Using Wax Crayons
Step 1. Get a box of crayons
The beauty of this method is that you can create lipsticks with every shade of the rainbow. Use the broken crayons you already have or buy a new box just for this purpose. You will need a crayon for each lipstick.
- Choose a reputable brand of crayons that are safe even if swallowed in small quantities. Since children often put them in their mouths, manufacturers create crayons that are non-toxic. Choose a type that has this information on the label.
- Smell the box before you buy them. You'll have to put them on your lips after all, so you need to make sure they don't smell too strong.
Step 2. Melt the pastels in a double boiler
If you use another method, you will burn them. First remove the label from the crayon, then put it in a double boiler over medium heat until it is completely dissolved.
- Use two pots, one large and one small. Put 5-6 cm of water in the large one and place the small one on top of it so that it floats on the water. Put the crayon in the small pot and turn on the stove.
- Use an old pot as it will be difficult to clean.
Step 3. Add oil to the crayons
You can use olive, almond, jojoba or coconut oil. Stir the ingredients until they are combined.
Step 4. Add a fragrance
A few drops of essential oil will help mask the smell of crayons. Try the rose, mint, lavender, or essential oil of your choice.
Step 5. Put the mixture into the containers
You can use an old lipstick or lip gloss tube, a small cosmetic jar, or any container that has a lid. Be careful when pouring the hot liquid. Let it harden in the refrigerator.
Method 4 of 4: Using Old Lipsticks
Step 1. Gather some old lipsticks in a microwave safe bowl
This method is ideal if you have old lipsticks that you would like to "recycle" by creating a new one. You can use lipsticks all of the same color, or mix them to get a whole new color.
Make sure you don't use expired lipsticks. If it is more than two years old, you should throw it away
Step 2. Microwave the lipsticks
Set the oven power to maximum and heat the lipsticks for 5 seconds. Let them melt, then mix the mixture with a plastic spoon to blend the colors.
- Microwave at 5 second intervals until the lipsticks are melted.
- As an alternative to the microwave you can melt the lipsticks in a double boiler. Add about a tablespoon (5ml) of beeswax or petroleum jelly to every 10cm of lipstick, as this method makes the mixture more liquid. Mix well until everything is melted together.
Step 3. Pour the mixture into a container
When ready, pour the melted lipstick mixture into a cosmetic jar or tin. Let it cool and harden before using it.
This type of lipstick is applied using a finger or a brush
Advice
- If you also want to treat your lips, add a little aloe vera.
- Add vanilla extract or another flavor to give the lipstick a good flavor.
