If you have a sofa you can imagine how unpleasant it is to move it, especially if you have to carry it up or down the stairs. Having an eviction company, I often have to do it. Most of our customers are amazed to see how easy it is to bring a sofa up (but more often down) the stairs. In this article I explain how to bring a sofa bed down the stairs, but the same principle can be applied to bring it up.
Steps
Step 1. Clear the passage
Make sure the passage you will use to move the sofa is clear of any objects. Use a tape measure to measure the height and width of the passage and compare them with the size of the sofa.
Step 2. Think of an action plan
Make sure your helper fully understands what you say so that your actions are synchronized, making the job easier and less risky. Discuss and try out the most problematic movements.
Step 3. Remove the mattresses and pillows
Remove the mattresses to lighten the load. Open the sofa bed and find the hinge that holds the bottom mattress in place. Remove it and set it aside where it doesn't clutter. Once the sofa is lightened, close it again.
Step 4. Tie the frame
You may need to tie the frame to prevent it from opening as you move it. You will need a meter of rope. Tie the frame in the center. If that's not possible, tie it on the sides or back.
Step 5. Lay the sofa on the backrest
Spread a cardboard on the floor and place the sofa on it. You can also fasten the cardboard to the sofa with a rope. If you have trolleys to move furniture, it's time to use them.
Step 6. Remove the feet
If possible, remove the sofa feet to make it easier to get through the doors. If this is not possible, move on to the next step.
Step 7. Push the sofa through the door
Push the sofa, placed on the cardboard or trolleys, through the first door. If the feet have been removed, it should go through. If you haven't removed them, the sofa may need to be angled so that one pair of feet can pass at a time.
Step 8. Take the sofa down the stairs
Remove the carts. Slide the sofa down, pushing on the opposite side of the stairs. The sofa will begin to tilt down. Let him go down until he is completely on the stairs. The person in front, on the stairs, will have to make sure that the cardboard does not get caught and will have to direct whoever is on top, telling him when to push. The cardboard reduces the friction between the sofa and the stairs, making work easier. If the stairs make a curve, you will need to raise the sofa to one side (on the armrests). You will need to move it from standing, commuting it as if it were walking, to the start of the next flight of stairs, with the cardboard facing the stairs, then lower it again. One person will have to guide the operation, making sure that the sofa does not fall, the other, with his hands over his head, will have to slowly lower the sofa onto the stairs. Repeat this until you reach the bottom of the stairs.
Step 9. Push the sofa to its destination, eventually replacing the trolleys
Advice
- You can use ratchet straps to hold the sofa tightly to the cardboard.
- The trolleys for moving furniture are very convenient. They cost an average of € 15 and are useful for many other things.
Warnings
- You can use a back belt to avoid back damage.
- At least two people are needed to do this job. Don't try to do it yourself or you risk getting hurt.
