Stairs are as useful in Minecraft as they are in the real world. They allow your character to descend and ascend much faster than if you had to climb many blocks. You also don't need to press the jump button. In addition to serving as stairs, due to their unique shape, stair blocks are also used to create constructions of more complex shapes; many players for example use them to create roofs.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Get the Materials
Step 1. Choose a material
You can build the stairs with many materials. Therefore, choose the one you prefer or decide taking into consideration the ones you have available. You can make stairs with the following materials:
- Bricks (clay)
- Wood planks: oak, fir, birch and jungle tree
- Quartz
- Crushed stone and stone blocks
- Sandstone
- Blocks of the nether.
Method 2 of 3: Building the Stairs
The steps required for construction are the same regardless of the material.
Step 1. Put the materials on the crafting table as follows:
- 3 blocks in the left column
- 2 blocks in the middle square and in the middle square of the lowest row
- 1 block in the lower right corner
- You can also build a staircase by placing the blocks in a mirror image of the one described.
Step 2. Collect 4 blocks of stairs
Click while holding down Shift or drag them to your inventory.
Method 3 of 3: Building with Stairs
Step 1. Create a staircase
- Place a diagonal, top to bottom line of blocks.
- Place the stairs on top of the blocks you placed.
Advice
- Walking up stairs, rather than jumping, will allow your character to move fast and to consume the hunger bar less quickly.
-
You will find some stairs already built in the villages. These are quite common blocks in pre-generated structures. If you find stairs, you can break them and collect them instead of building them.
- Wooden stairs: You can find them as furniture to sit on in homes
- Crushed Stairs: You can find them in front of doors or inside churches (in NPC villages) and fortresses
- Sandstone Stairs: These can be found in desert NPC villages and desert temples.
- Nether Brick Stairs: You can find them in Nether Fortresses.
- Building a roof with stairs takes skill; Since the blocks remain suspended in the void in Minecraft though, you should be able to line up the blocks to create one. Choose stairs of a different color from the walls to create contrast between these two elements and do not build a structure that is too monochromatic.
