Living in a garage can be a choice or a necessity (for example, during renovations or after a disaster). In any case, it is important to make it more comfortable. Here are some suggestions.
Steps
Step 1. Clean
Garages tend to be dirty, dusty, and greasy places. Eliminates all contaminated products and stains. Sweep up and get rid of the sawdust, shavings, grime residue and any material you can't identify.
Remove all junk, boxes and bicycles. You need to be able to move around smoothly. Leave only essential items inside the garage
Step 2. Make sure there is no moisture problem
Check if the walls and floor are damp. Moisture comes from the building's foundations, leaking pipes or rain. This problem causes foul-smelling mold that destroys clothing and promotes chronic coughing because it is both a toxin and an allergen.
Consider whether you can waterproof the exterior
Step 3. Make sure the seals on the door and possibly the windows are in good condition to prevent moisture, dust, insects or other particles from entering the garage
Clean all windows
Step 4. Keep the door as you found it, otherwise some modifications could damage it
Step 5. Furnish the interior
Add your chosen furniture and accessories. If you want to reuse them, you may want to cover the ones that are in good condition and store them so that you can furnish your garage with second-hand furniture. If the ones you had got ruined or lost due to a disaster, you may want to opt for second-hand items.
- Take a trip to the flea markets to save money. Make sure whatever you buy works and is clean.
- Put the furniture in the garage. Arrange them so that the environment is spacious, functional and does not block the passage.
Step 6. If you can, install a sink, tub, tub, or even a private bathroom
You can connect the shower to an external drain system to avoid water accumulating inside the garage.
Step 7. Create some privacy
If you live with other people, separate the rooms in which you sleep. You just need some wooden screens, as well as a door or a curtain to enter each "room".
Step 8. Create a kitchenette
A sink, stove and dining table are essential. You can prepare food on the table if there is no space for an additional shelf.
Step 9. Come up with a good heating system
In the garage it is much colder than in the house. Whichever method you use to warm up must be safe as it is easy for the garage to catch fire. Electric radiators should stop if they are turned upside down. If, on the other hand, you prefer gas or open flame heating, the flue must be able to direct the toxic substances outwards.
Advice
- Flea markets allow you to save a lot of money.
- Make the indoor environment comfortable.
- You need power. Two electrical outlets and a cable will suffice.
- If the door doesn't have a lock, put a padlock on it.
