To change the settings of a Linksys router, you will first need to log into its web GUI. From this interface you can perform various operations, such as updating firmware, changing firewall and network security, and changing the IP address from static to dynamic. This article provides instructions for accessing the web GUI of a Linksys router.
Steps
Step 1. Locate the default address to log into the router, for Windows users
This IP address will be used to access the graphical interface. Click Start and type "cmd" in the search bar located under "All Programs Menu". The command screen will open.
Type "ipconfig" in the command screen to receive device configuration information. The default router address will be listed at the top of the window, under the subnet mask. So you can determine the gateway address
Step 2. Determine the default router address, for Mac OS X users
Click the Apple icon in the menu bar and select System Preferences. A window with the Network option will open. Select Internet & Wireless.
Click the "Advanced" button in the Network window and open the TCP / IP tab to view the network configurations. Write down the gateway address and close the window. You have found the default gateway address
Step 3. Log in to the router's web interface using the obtained address
Type the address in the web browser. The web interface will open.
- Use default username and password when prompted. These vary by device and internet provider. However in most cases, the username will be "admin" and the password will be "admin" or "password". In some cases, the username is "Administration" with no password.
- Enter the default username and password when prompted to log into the router. Immediately hit Enter after entering your username. If prompted again, enter "admin" in the username and password field and press Enter again.
Step 4. Reset the Linksys router password
If you have forgotten or lost your old password, you can reset it to reuse the default username and password to log into the router. Use a toothpick to press the reset button located on the back of the router and hold it for 30 seconds.
