Do you hate those occasions when, after turning on your computer and opening your browser, you realize that you have a bad or even no internet connection? You probably need to reset your Linksys router. This article contains some tips to facilitate this and restore the best internet connection.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Perform a Physical Reset
Step 1. Turn off your computer
Step 2. Turn off or unplug the cable that goes from your router to the ADSL modem
Step 3. On the back of your router, locate a small round recessed button, labeled 'Reset'
Step 4. Use a paper clip or a thin, pointed object
Press and hold the reset button while turning on your router and continue holding it for the next 30 seconds.
Step 5. Wait for the router lights for power on, modem connection, and internet traffic to come on and show no errors
Step 6. If it is a separate device turn on or connect the ADSL modem to your router
Step 7. Turn on your computer and open your browser to check for an internet connection
If you still have no connection, try restarting your computer.
Method 2 of 3: Perform a Soft Reset
Step 1. From your computer, open your internet browser and, in the address bar, type '192.168.1.1'
This is the default login IP address of your router.
Step 2. Enter your username and password in the appropriate fields
If you have not changed the original settings of these parameters enter 'admin' for both.
Step 3. Click on the admin settings label
Select 'Yes' under the item for factory reset.
Step 4. Click on 'Save Settings'
Turn off the router and leave it off for 10 seconds, then turn it back on for the reset to take effect.
Method 3 of 3: Update your Public IP Address
Step 1. Open your computer browser and enter '192.168.1.1' in the address bar
Fill in the username and password fields or enter the default values, 'admin' for both.
Step 2. Select the label for your ISP (Internet Service Provider) connection settings
Copy them to a sheet of paper or take a screenshot of the screen, in case you need to re-enter them later. Enter the host name and domain name in the relevant DNS settings fields.
Step 3. Select the 'Release and Renew' button (if translated into Italian you should find something similar to Renew IP Address) until you get an address that works correctly
Advice
- By resetting your router you will lose your configuration data. All customizations related to opening doors for the use of particular applications, wireless network settings and all changes made to configuration parameters, including the access password, will be lost.
- Depending on the internet provider you use, if your router has changed its public IP address during the reset procedure, it will take up to 24 hours for your ISP to assign you a new internet address. During this time, you may have a limited or no connection.
- The default settings of many routers are managed automatically via DHCP or NAT. Keep this in mind if you have changed your settings by assigning static addresses to your devices.
- If, after these steps, you continue to have problems with the connection, contact the technical support of your internet connection manager.
