Step 1. Open FL Studio

You will see a vertical menu on your left and two rectangles, the largest is the playlist, while the smallest is the sequencer. From this menu, look for the “Packs” tab and open it. From here, you can select samples to build your rhythm on. Each package contains different instrumental samples, choose the one that suits you best.

Step 2. Choose the sample

Click on the samples to listen to them. A good idea for creating a simple rhythm would be to start with simple percussion like a kick drum, hi-hat, and snare drum. Choose as many as you want and drag them into the sequencer “sample” slot.

Step 3. Create the rhythm

You will notice, in the sequencer, that each slot is represented by four sets of four boxes, which alternate between black and red. Each block of four boxes represents a pulse, while the individual boxes represent fractions of the pulse. Check the individual boxes by clicking on them. The sample will be played in sequence in the selected boxes. To deselect a box simply click on it with the right mouse button.

Step 4. Create a practice rhythm

Create your own pace. As an indication, remember that most Rock and Hip Hop music is 4/4. To create a simple 4/4 rhythm, select boxes 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15 in the hi-hat channel; 5 and 13 on the snare drum channel and 1, 11 and 13 on the bass drum channel.
