This article explains how to disable the functionality of the "Fn" function key of a keyboard on a PC or Mac.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Use the Windows Num Lock key
Step 1. Locate the "Num Lock" function key on your keyboard
It is located next to the numeric keypad or as a secondary function of another key.
The "Num Lock" key is primarily used to enable or disable the numeric keypad keys on the keyboard, but it can also be used to disable the "Fn" key
Step 2. Press and hold the Fn key on your keyboard
This way you will have the option to use the "Num Lock" key to disable the "Fn" key.
Step 3. Press the Num Lock key while holding the button Fn.
This will disable the functionality of the "Fn" key.
The "Num Lock" key may be indicated with a different abbreviation, depending on the country in which the keyboard or computer was manufactured. For example, in the case of an American keyboard it will be marked with the abbreviation Num ⇩
Method 2 of 3: Use the Fn Lock key in Windows
Step 1. Locate the "Fn Lock" key on the keyboard
It is usually characterized by a padlock icon and the abbreviation "Fn".
It is often integrated into the keyboard as a secondary function of a standard function key (F1-F12) or another special key, such as the Esc key
Step 2. Press and hold the Fn key on your keyboard
This way you can use the "Fn Lock" function to disable the "Fn" key.
Step 3. Press the Fn Lock key while holding the button Fn.
The function of the "Fn" key will be disabled.
The "Fn Lock" key works similar to the "Caps Lock" key. You can turn it on or off at any time
Method 3 of 3: Mac
Step 1. Go to the "Apple" menu of the Mac
Click on the Apple logo icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
Step 2. Click on the System Preferences item
The Mac window of the same name will appear.
Step 3. Click the Keyboard icon in the "System Preferences" window
It features a stylized keyboard and is visible in the second row of options. The text input and typing settings window will appear.
Step 4. Click on the Keyboard tab located at the top of the window
It is visible next to the card Text of the "Keyboard" window.
The "Keyboard" tab is the one that normally appears automatically when you open the "Keyboard" window. If this is the case for you, you will not need to take any additional action
Step 5. Select the "Use F1, F2, etc. keys" checkbox
as standard function keys.
When the indicated option is active, the Fn key is disabled, except to use the special functions of the function keys F1-F12.
- This option is displayed at the bottom of the "Keyboard" tab.
- At this point the function keys "F1-F12", arranged along the first row of keys of the keyboard starting from the top, will act as simple function keys and you can use them without having to press the special "Fn" key.
- If you need to use one of the special features of the function keys, you will need to press the corresponding key while holding down the "Fn" key. The latter will be the only function of the "Fn" key.
