Relaxing hair treatments, also called straighteners, are used on naturally curly or wavy hair to achieve a smooth, shiny style. When choosing these products, care must be taken as they contain chemicals. Follow the steps to learn how to apply a hair straightener.
Steps
Step 1. Decide which product to use
The choice depends on the type of your hair. For example, if you have thick hair, you will need to choose a product with an "extra strong" hold
Step 2. Put on a cape or towel to cover your shoulders
As these products contain chemicals, it is important to protect your clothing from splashing. Use a cutting cape or shoulder towel
Step 3. Start by dividing your hair into sections
Divide dry hair into four parts: front right, front left, back left, and back right
Step 4. Use a comb to form 3mm strands
Step 5. Wear gloves to protect your hands from chemicals
Step 6. Apply the smoothing product to the hair evenly
Hair straighteners can be in cream or paste and sometimes consist of different parts that need to be mixed in order for the chemicals to activate and complete the straightening process
Step 7. Apply the straightener to the 3mm strands of hair
To do this, you will need to use a special brush that is at least 2.5cm wide. Distribute the product well over the four sections of hair to completely cover them
Step 8. If you have curly hair, style it with your fingers or the tip of a comb
Start with the first section. Divide it into small sections of 3 mm each. With your fingers, stretch and iron the curls. You can use the flat back of a comb for this. Repeat for all sections
Step 9. Have the product act as directed in the instructions
Step 10. Rinse your hair with warm water
Hot water opens the hair cuticles making it easier to rinse. Rinse your hair for 5 minutes or more, depending on the length
Step 11. Apply neutral shampoo if needed
The product instructions will give you more information about applying the product and how to rinse your hair. Each brand has different instructions
Step 12. Use a moisturizing conditioner especially on the ends of the hair
The chemicals present in the straighteners could alter the structure of the hair, damaging it
Step 13. Dry and style your hair as you wish
Advice
- After the treatment, use high-quality shampoo and conditioner. They will help rebuild the damaged hair shaft.
- Between the main application and subsequent touch-ups, you should leave at least 20 minutes.
- It will take about an hour to complete all the steps. For long hair, it will take longer.
Warnings
- Make sure you read the instructions carefully. Each brand of hair straightener has specific guidelines to follow.
- Do not apply a straightening treatment to hair that has already been lightened. Chemical reactions between the products used could cause hair loss as they would burn.
