Mustache wax is used to shape and control mustaches. From the past to the present day, countless types of this wax have been created, and using it is a lot of fun! However, using mustache wax for the first time can be tricky and discouraging.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Choosing the Wax
Step 1. Decide which type of wax you would like to use
The variety available on the market is huge.
- Some types include: organic, without ingredients of petrochemical origin (petroleum jelly), colored, soy-free and vegan, and other classic varieties with petrochemical components.
- Wax models can be purchased considering different degrees of hold: light / medium, medium, strong or extra strong.
Step 2. Choose the type of wax

Traditional wax.
Traditional wax can usually be purchased in tubes and contains ingredients of petrochemical origin (petroleum jelly, mineral oils, etc.). The proportions of the ingredients of most traditional waxes are: 1: 1 beeswax and petroleum jelly. This formula was the most used until people became more aware of the possible negative effects of certain ingredients if used for a long time.
- The hold of traditional wax can be medium or strong, and some men don't need any other features. The consistency of the wax is soft and very malleable.
- This type of wax is said to clog skin pores, causing acne, hives and skin irritations. The long-term effects have not yet been confirmed, but there is a lot of research going on. Remember that if you use it, you breathe it throughout the day.

A large number of wax models on the market can be found in rectangular or round containers. If the wax is in a tin can it is a good sign, and the ingredients will most likely be natural and organic. However, there are exceptions, and it is always best to carefully read the ingredients list on the back of the jar to find out if the wax contains chemicals that are harmful to health. If in doubt, contact the retailer.
Part 2 of 3: Apply Mustache Wax
Step 1. Using the wax in a jar may not be very comfortable, and it is recommended to use it at a temperature slightly above room temperature
Some people heat it for a few seconds with a hairdryer to soften it. If you decide to heat it, be careful as it may become liquid. Others prefer to put the closed jar under hot water for a minute or two. Once you get used to using this type of wax, you will no longer need to use these methods.
Step 2. Take some wax with your thumb nail or index finger
Put your finger on the surface of the wax, lift it and bend it slightly until it forms a 90 degree angle. Remember that the end of the nail only has to touch the surface. Now slide your nail over the wax from one side of the jar to the other. You should have a thin layer of wax behind your nail. With your thumb and forefinger work the wax and form a ball the size of a chickpea.
Step 3. Flatten the ball with your fingers and rub the wax back and forth
It should now be soft and malleable.
Step 4. Apply the wax to one side of your mustache starting from the center to the outside
Repeat this process on the other mustache. With a baby comb or toothbrush, run the wax through the whiskers. Now is the time to shape it.
Step 5. Depending on the length of your mustache and the style you want to create, you may need to use more wax
If you are using it just to keep your mustache from going into your mouth, use the comb simply to keep your mustache smooth and tidy. If you do this every day, the mustache will easily take the shape you want.
Step 6. Check the results
As soon as you apply the wax, the mustache may look greasy, but as it dries it hardens and the effect will be different. If the quality of the wax is good, it will not flake and it will not crumble. If it gives you these problems, don't use it anymore.
Step 7. Consider choosing an organic product
The benefits of preferring organic and natural ingredients over chemical ones are not only related to your health, but also to a greater seal. Natural ingredients penetrate the hair making it soft and strengthening it. Petroleum jelly, on the other hand, creates a barrier that prevents pores and whiskers from breathing.
Part 3 of 3: Remove the Mustache Wax
Step 1. Know why it is best to always remove the wax
If you don't, the residue will close the pores and consequently ruin the mustache. In the past, hot water and soap were enough to remove the wax. Most of the soaps that are now on the market are detergents that damage the hair making it dry and with split ends. As an alternative, it is better to choose specific liquid products based on oil and softeners.
Step 2. Massage a small amount of the product into your mustache
Make sure you apply it all over your mustache. Allow a few minutes to get the oil to work and soften the wax. Then brush the mustache with a comb or brush from the center to the outside of each mustache. At this point, you can rinse your mustache with warm water or leave the oils to work overnight (as a softening treatment).
