An aquatic insect is a general term for insects such as beetles or palmetto insects that settle near water sources. They are attracted to food and water, so the best way to get rid of them is to make sure that the food and water don't stay outdoors. Find out how to get rid of aquatic insects.
Steps
Method 1 of 5: Part One: Clean the Area
Step 1. Check that there is no food or water exposed to the air in the area around your home
Remove pet food if you can. Cockroaches and other insects can live on your pet's food. If possible, arrange meals so that the dog or cat eats all of their food immediately so you can wash the bowl right away
Step 2. Put the food inside the refrigerator whenever you can
If you can't store it in the refrigerator, put it in airtight containers.
Step 3. Use garbage cans with lids with a great seal
Bins and compost heaps that are exposed to the air attract, feed and shelter more insects. Take out the trash every day when you have a cockroach infestation.
Step 4. Clean around the house and in the yard
Aquatic insects live in places that are rarely cleaned and removed.
- Collect newspapers and food containers every week. Make sure recycling bins have airtight lids.
- Remove the old cardboard boxes. These are common hiding places.
Step 5. Check if there are water deposits inside and outside your home
Water bowls for your pets, tarps, water glasses, plant saucers, bird trays, and rainwater can all be inviting places for insects to hatch.
Put a lid on the water containers. Turn bird trays, pots, and other containers upside down during the rainy season
Step 6. Thoroughly clean the kitchen with disinfectant
Be sure to include kitchen appliances, such as the toaster, food processor, juicer, grill, and other areas where food particles get trapped.
Method 2 of 5: Part Two: Changing Daily Habits
Step 1. Eat food in one room of the house
Discourage children from having a snack in the room or in front of the television.
Step 2. Vacuum the dining room regularly
This reduces the food available for the insects.
Clean rugs or carpets with soap and water at least once a year
Method 3 of 5: Part Three: Repair the House
Step 1. Repair leaking taps both in the house and in the yard
Make sure you put these tasks on your to-do list immediately. Cockroaches can survive for a long time if they have a constant water source.
Step 2. Examine the house to check that the doors and windows are well insulated
If necessary, replace the fixtures with others that are more adherent, so that insects cannot enter.
Step 3. Close the holes in the concrete to reduce the accumulation of water
Step 4. Waterproof the holes in your insulation or walls
This prevents aquatic insects from entering and creating a nest.
Step 5. Put mosquito nets on doors and windows
Leave them open to circulate the air in humid areas. Water insects prefer humid areas, so keep your house dry and well ventilated.
Method 4 of 5: Part Four: Try Natural Remedies
Step 1. Locate the nest or nests
This will help you get rid of the water bug problem quickly and in a targeted manner.
Step 2. Pour 2-4 cups (0.5 to 1.00 L) of distilled white vinegar into all of your drains
Including the dishwasher, the bathtub and the toilets, as well as the sinks.
Step 3. Pour a few tablespoons of liquid dish detergent into your pool, if you notice an infestation
Turn off the pump.
Give the bugs time to die and rise to the surface when they get stuck. Remove them with a pool net several hours later. Turn the pump back on
Step 4. Make a mixture of half powdered sugar and half baking soda
Sprinkle a thin layer on the insect infested area. Wait for them to die and take them off.
Method 5 of 5: Part Five: Testing Chemical Pesticides
Step 1. Dust the area around the nest with borax
Boric acid penetrates their paws and kills them.
Water insects avoid large lumps of borax, so make sure the dusting is very thin
Step 2. Use cockroach traps
These traps involve concentrated poison inside a box. Water insects are attracted to and die inside the box so you can then safely remove them.
Step 3. Call an exterminator
If your home is infested with water bugs, you may need to use a more aggressive chemical treatment. In this case, you will need to evacuate the house and clean the kitchen and other surfaces before using them again.
