Repainting old and dated cabinets is an easy way to remodel your kitchen without breaking the piggy bank. As long as the laminate surface is in good condition and adheres well, it can be repainted. You will need to prepare the surface properly and apply a proper primer to make sure the new paint grips the smooth, slippery surface of the laminate. Read the article below for instructions on how to repaint laminate cabinets.
Steps
Step 1. Remove all visible hardware from cabinets, including handles and levers
You can completely detach the doors if the hinges are visible or easy to remove. It will allow you to paint the facade and shelves of the cabinet carefully and separately with little dirt.
Step 2. Cover any non-removable hardware with painter's tape
Step 3. Thoroughly clean all laminated surfaces with a degreaser, such as sodium phosphate
Apply the chemical carefully and following the directions given. Once cleaned, rinse all surfaces thoroughly with fresh water and allow the laminate to dry completely before proceeding.
Step 4. Sand all laminated surfaces with 120 grit sandpaper
You'll want to create a surface that's rough enough for the paint to stick, so make sure all surfaces are scrubbed well. Once you have finished sanding, sweep away all the dust by first vacuuming all surfaces and then wiping them with a clean, damp rag. Again, allow the laminate to dry completely before proceeding.
Step 5. Apply a specific laminate primer per product instructions
You can buy an appropriate primer at most hardware stores. Let it dry completely as per the instructions on the label.
Step 6. Apply a latex or oil based paint of your taste over the dry primer
Oil-based paints offer a smoother, easier-to-clean finish, so they're the best choice for kitchens and bathrooms. Apply the paint with a roller to avoid leaving brush marks on the laminate surface.
Step 7. Replace all hardware and refit the cabinet doors once the paint has completely dried
Advice
- Create good ventilation in the area where you will be painting by opening windows or turning on a fan.
- Spread a small amount of cooking oil on the cabinet doors where they touch the frame to prevent them from sticking before they are completely dry.
