Sliding wardrobe doors are doors that slide one behind the other, using a minimal amount of space. Follow these steps to install sliding wardrobe doors in any room in the house.
Steps
Step 1. Prepare the doors for assembly
If they are not finished, you should paint them or apply stain remover before mounting them.
Step 2. Measure the opening of your closet doors
Determine the horizontal and vertical measurements, as well as the height and width of each old cabinet door.
Step 3. Remove existing cabinet doors if needed
If you have sliding doors fitted at the moment, lift each door off the bottom of the track first. Then, place each door on the floor next to the track. This will remove the door from the upper track. Put the old doors aside.
Step 4. Remove the old rails, hinges or screws using a power drill with a screwdriver bit
Use putty to plug any holes as needed. Paint any large grout stains that won't be covered by the new sliding doors.
Step 5. Line up the old rails with the new ones to find the right length for the new rails
Cut the new ones to the closet size with a hacksaw.
Step 6. Fit the new rails to the top of the cabinet using your electric drill
- The rails may have pre-existing holes for screwing the supports into the cabinet frame. If there aren't any, drill holes and fit the screws that came out along with the doors.
- Make sure that the screws adhere to the rail and do not come out or interfere with the movement of the door. Similarly, don't over tighten them as you may distort the track.
Step 7. Hang the doors on the top rail starting with the back rail
The doors have wheels at the top that will fit into the top rail.
- Turn the front of each door so that it faces you as you lift it.
- Lift the door and place it in the top rail, starting with the back side. Once the back of the door is in place, the front side will fall into place as well. Repeat the process with the second door.
Step 8. Let the doors hang straight from the top rail
Mark where the bottom rail is to be placed.
Step 9. Remove the doors from the upper supports
Step 10. Fit the bottom rails using the measurements marked earlier
Step 11. Hang the doors on the top rail again, using the same procedure
The bottom of the doors will slide into place if all of your measurements are correct.
Advice
- Leaving old accessories in place might seem like a way to save time, but take the time to replace them with new ones. The supports that come out with the doors are made specifically to support those doors.
- Instead of throwing your old doors in a landfill, reuse them. Try cutting them to turn them into shelves, use them as a work table or repurpose them as screens.
