If you are starting Pokémon White or Pokémon Black, you will definitely need a balanced Pokémon team. These steps will show you how to do it. Additionally, many Pokémon will be named with their basic forms.
Steps
Step 1. Go to Bulbapedia, or Serebii.net, Go to the Unova pokédex and see which Pokémon you like best for each type
This will help you in choosing your team members.
Step 2. Make a grass, fire and water chain
You will get a starter and a monkey in the game, so those are two Pokémon you choose right now. If you started with Tepig and Pansage, good water Pokémon could be Tympol, Tirtouga, or Frillish. If you started with Snivy and Panpour, good fire choices could be Darumaka, Litwick, or Heatmor. If you've chosen Oshawott and Pansear, good weed choices are Sewaddle, Deerling, Ferroseed, Petilil, or Cottonee.
Step 3. Capture a flying Pokémon
A flying Pokémon is important because they are really strong in Unova. The main reason though is that almost anyone can learn HM Flight which allows you to fly from city to city. Good Pokémon that can learn HM Flight (in all three evolutions) are: Pidove, Vullaby, Rufflet, Archen, Sigilyphl, Woobat, or Ducklett.
Step 4. Fill the other free spaces with Dark, Dragon, Ice, Earth, Fighting or Rock types
You could get Pokémon with two types such as Bisharp, Dark-type and Steel-type. Good Dark Pokémon are: Pawniard, Zorua, Deino, Scraggy, and Purrloin. Good Dragon Pokémon are Axew and Druddigon. Good Ice Pokémon are Vanilite, Cubchoo, and Cryogonal. Good Ground Pokémon are Drilbur, Stunfisk, and Sandile. A good Fighting type is Timbur. A good Rock-type is Roggenrola.
Step 5. If you still have room on your team, try adding Electric, Poison, Steel, Bug, Psychic, Ghost, or Normal Pokémon
Try Joltik or Tynamo for the Electro, Trubbish for the Poison, Klink for the Steel, Venipede, Dwebble, Karrablast, Shelmet and Larvesta for the Beetle. You can also catch Gothita, Munna, Solosis or Elgyem for the Psychic type. A good Ghost type is Yamask. Good Normal-type Pokémon are Lillipup, Patrat, Audino, Minccino, and Bouffalant.
Step 6. Make sure your team is well balanced and can fight many types
For example, this is a good team: Haxorus, Emboar, Gothitelle, Simisage, Mandibuzz and Seismitoad.
Advice
- Always carry a good number of Pokéballs with you. You may never know when you might find a Pokémon you like or a rare Pokémon.
- Work out. Run in the tall grass until it moves and an Audino will appear. Defeat it and you will be rewarded with a mountain of experience points. For example: If your Pokémon is level 34, you fight a level 32 Audino.
Warnings
- Some legendaries are not allowed in online battles. Keep that in mind.
- Traded Pokémon will not always obey you. Unless you have the proper medals, high-level traded Pokémon will not obey you. So be careful when using trading Pokémon.
- Don't train your starters ONLY, leaving the rest of your team 6 levels less than the starters. Maintain the level of your team members with a maximum difference of 4 levels.
