Do you want to evolve your Clamperl into something more useful? With the right item and a friend to trade with, you can evolve Clamperl into one of two very powerful Pokemon. Obtaining the item can be difficult, especially in older versions of the game. Start with Step 1 to evolve your Clamperl in no time.
Steps
Step 1. Choose between Huntail and Gorebyss
When you evolve your Clamperl, you will have the option to choose between two different Pokemon according to the item you will use. Both are of the Water type. Gorebyss' strength is special attacks, while Huntail's physical ones. Look at the stats and decide which one fits your team best.
In the newer Pokemon games you can find both items needed for evolution, and you can get both Pokemon
Step 2. Obtain the Abyssal Tooth or the Abyssal Scale
The Tooth is for Huntail, while the Scale is for Gorebyss. You can only find one or the other in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.

Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald - to get the item, you will need Surf and Sub. Reach Route 108 and swim to the Abandoned Ship. Use Sub to access the second part of the ship.
- You will arrive in a room with 5 locked doors. The keys will be visible as sparks for a moment when you enter the room.
- Find the Scanner in Room 2, and take it to Captain Stern in Porto Selcepoli. Choose between the Tooth and the Scale as a reward.

Diamond, Pearl and Platinum - some wild Pokemon can hold these items. This means you could find them by catching them and taking the item from them. You can also try using Thief, Begging, or Swindling to steal the item.
- You can find the Scale on Chinchou, Relicanth and Lanturn.
- You can find the Tooth on Carvanha and Sharpedo.
- Black and white - You can find the Scale on Route 13, and is also held by the wild Chinchou, Lanturn, Gorebyss, Relicant and Blue Basculin. You can find the Tooth on Route 13 and Route 17, and is also held by the Carvanha, Sharpedo, and wild red Basculin.

Black and White 2 - You can purchase the Tooth and Scale from the Antiques Shop in the Solidarity Gallery, located between Route 4 and Nimbasa City. To open the antiques shop, choose the answer "I want to collect unique items and surprise everyone".
- To find the right items from the Antiques Shop, the shopkeeper will have to be the Pokemon Ranger Attilio. Purchase one of the Boxes for a chance to find the Tooth or Scale.
- You can also find the Tooth on Carvanha, Sharpedo and wild red Basculin. You can find the Scale on Chinchou, Lanturn, Gorebyss, Relicanth and wild blue Basculin.
- In White 2, you can also find the Tooth and Scale in the White Forest.
- X and Y - You can find the Tooth and the Scale in the Blue Bay.
Step 3. Have Clamperl hold the items
You won't be able to evolve it otherwise. Clamperl's level is not important for its evolution.
Step 4. Swap your Clamperl
It will only evolve if you trade it. This means that if you want to evolve your Clamperl, you will need to find someone who is willing to give it back to you after you trade it. To start the evolution, execute the trade and it will happen automatically. The object will disappear during the process.
