In Minecraft, saddles are used to ride horses, mules and pigs. When you need one, however, you won't be able to build it like many other objects in the game, but only find it. If you are well equipped, you can find a saddle in the numerous chests found in dungeons and temples. If you have a lot of resources available, you can get one by exchanging emeralds with a villager. Hardened anglers have a small chance of finding one on the hook. Finally, if you don't feel like waiting to find your saddle, with a few simple tricks you can get one in an instant.
Steps
Part 1 of 5: Finding a Saddle in the Crates
Step 1. Look for rare chests in your adventures
Saddles cannot be built, so one of the best ways to find them is to open any chests you find, as there is a small chance they will contain them. In some areas of the game world the odds are higher.
Step 2. Find a dungeon
Dungeon chests have the highest chance of holding a saddle - precisely 54%. You can recognize the dungeons by the stone walls, floors and ceilings. Typically they contain a zombie, skeleton or spider build block and a crate or two. In rare cases, it can happen that a dungeon is spawned without any chest. If, on the other hand, the one you are visiting contains two, you will probably find the saddle you are looking for.
- Dungeons can be spawned anywhere in the world.
- The chance of finding a saddle in dungeon crates will be reduced from 54% to 29% in Minecraft version 1.9.
Step 3. Enter the Underworld and find a Fortress
Fortresses of the Underworld are another place where the odds of finding a saddle are higher. To access the Underworld, you need to build a portal using obsidian blocks. Read the article How to Create a Nether Portal in Minecraft for detailed instructions. The Underworld is a dangerous place, so make sure you have adequate equipment and plenty of supplies.
There is a 40% chance to find a saddle in the chests of the Underworld Fortresses. This percentage will drop to 35% in version 1.9 of the game
Step 4. Find a desert temple
These structures are generated in the desert biome and their floor is always at the height Y = 64. This means that the entrance could be partially or completely covered by sand.
- When you have found the temple, look for the blue clay block in the center of the structure. Digging into that spot you will discover a secret chamber which contains four chests. There is a 15% chance that each of the chests will contain a saddle (from version 1.9 of the game the probability will increase to 24%). This means that you are almost certain to find what you are looking for.
- Watch out for the TNT trap when you drop into the secret chamber. Drop some object first to snap the pressure plate.
Step 5. Look for a blacksmith in a village
There is a high probability that there is a blacksmith in the villages. In his house you will find a chest, which has a 16% chance to contain a saddle.
Step 6. Search jungle temples and abandoned mines
In these two places you can find chests that have a 15% chance of containing a saddle. The jungle temple contains two chests defended from many traps, while the abandoned mines can hold numerous chests in the carts, depending on the size of the structure.
In version 1.9 of the game, mine carts will no longer contain crates
Part 2 of 5: Getting a Saddle with an Exchange
Step 1. Find a tanner to trade with
If you're playing the computer or console versions of Minecraft, you can talk to villagers around the world to trade items for emeralds and vice versa. By completing the available trades, you will open up new possibilities. The tanner (white coat) can offer you a saddle as a third trade.
Exchanges are not available in Minecraft PE
Step 2. Obtain some emeralds
You will need between 9 and 16 emeralds to be able to purchase the saddle, plus another 8-10 gems for the saddle itself. You can find these gemstones by digging underground, searching chests, and trading with other villagers.
Step 3. Open the trade window with the tanner
If you have any emeralds, right click on the tanner to open the window where you can complete trades.
Step 4. Use 2-4 emeralds to purchase the leather pants
Close the trade window after completing the trade. The tanner will advance to the next trade level.
Step 5. Open the trade window again and purchase the leather armor
The cost is 7-12 emeralds. Make sure you close the window again, to proceed to the next level.
Step 6. Open the exchange window a third time to purchase the saddle
The tanner should now offer you the saddle for 8-10 emeralds. Buy it if you have enough gems.
Part 3 of 5: Getting a Saddle by Fishing
Step 1. Look for saddles when you go fishing
The odds are low (less than 1%), but it is possible to hook a saddle. This shouldn't become your primary method of getting the item you're after, but if you fish often you may be lucky.
Step 2. Build a fishing rod
All you need is three sticks and two ropes. You can build sticks from wooden planks, while you can get ropes from cobwebs and spiders.
Place the three sticks diagonally across the workbench grid, from the bottom left corner to the top right corner. Put the two ropes in the other boxes of the right column
Step 3. Approach a body of water
You can fish anywhere there is water and the results do not vary depending on the location.
Step 4. Cast the line
Use the fishing rod to lower the hook into the water. Watch the hook closely to know when to pull.
Step 5. Pull the line when the hook goes under the water
This indicates that you have captured something. By pulling at the right moment, your prey will fly towards you.
Step 6. Apply the Luck of the Sea spell to the fishing rod
This spell increases the chances of finding treasure by fishing. The third level of the spell increases the chances of obtaining a saddle by up to 1,77% (from 0,84%).
- Avoid the Lure spell if you are trying to get the saddle or other treasure, as you would be less likely to succeed.
- Read the article How to Build a Spell Table in Minecraft to find out more about the enchanting process.
Part 4 of 5: Getting a Saddle with Cheats
Step 1. Activate the cheats
To use the commands below, you need to enable cheats in your world. There are two ways to do this, one if you created the world and one if you didn't.
- When creating a new world, you can enable cheats from the Create World menu.
- If you have already created your world, open the Pause menu and select "Open to LAN". Click on the "Cheats:" button and set it to ON.
Step 2. Switch to Creative mode to easily get a saddle
The easiest way to get the item you want is to play Creative and put a saddle next to your character.
To switch modes, open the chat window (T) and type / gamemode c. You can then select the saddle from the list of available items and spawn one in front of your character. When you return to Survival mode (/ gamemode s) you will be able to pick it up and use it
Step 3. Put a saddle in your inventory with a command
You can use console commands to generate a saddle in your inventory. Open the chat window by pressing T and type the following command to get a single saddle:
/ give playername saddle 1
Step 4. Summons a tamed horse with a saddle
If you don't feel like looking for an animal to train, you can use the cheats to spawn a horse complete with harness. Open the chat window by pressing T and type the following command:
/ summon EntityHorse ~ ~ ~ {Tame: 1, SaddleItem: {id: 329, Count: 1}}
Part 5 of 5: Using a Saddle
Step 1. Tame a wild horse by approaching it and "using" it (right clicking) empty-handed
You will get on his back and you will probably be thrown off the saddle. After a few attempts, you will be able to ride it and hearts will sprout from the animal.
Step 2. While on the horse, open the inventory
Make sure you have the saddle.
Step 3. Put the saddle in the appropriate box next to the horse image
You can now ride the animal, using the same controls you use to move normally. Horses can charge a jump by holding the jump button.
Step 4. Remove the saddle
To remove the saddle from a horse, select it and remove the item from its inventory.
Step 5. Saddle a pig
You don't have to ride only horses! You can also use the saddle on pigs and take them around the world:
- Holding the saddle in your hand, use it on the pig you want to tame. The saddle will be permanently absorbed by the animal.
- Control the saddled pork with a carrot tied to a stick. After some time, the pig will run at five blocks per second.
- You cannot remove a saddle from a pig without killing it.
