If your bedroom seems boring to you and you want to make big changes, you've come to the right place! You can make your room perform at its best by following these tips.
Steps
Step 1. Start by getting rid of the garbage
Grab a trash can or trash bag and go through every part of your room, throwing away what you find useless. Throw away the old crumpled papers, food wrappers, broken objects… get rid of any junk.
Step 2. Next, put all your clothes away
Spend some time cleaning up your closet and getting rid of any clothes you don't use. Some of the things you don't use, those that are pierced or broken, you can throw away. You can put the others in another bag to donate. Clothes that you like but can't wear because they need some repair (like garments that have lost a button), put them aside, creating a pile of things to mend. The things that are in excellent condition, and that you wear, you can put them back in the closet, but don't waste time arranging them. We will return to this later. Grab a notebook and write down what you may need for the closet, such as coat hangers, door handles or shoe racks.
Step 3. Check your desk and bookcase
You will use the garbage bag and the donation bag again. Donate books you no longer read, binders in good condition that you don't use, and other office items you've never used and don't need. Throw away old papers, bad pens, and broken or bad school items. Write in your notebook the new things you need (notebooks, magazine organizers, bookends…). Put away the remaining things in an approximate way: the books in the library, the pens in the special container, etc.
Step 4. Take the notebook and start drawing
Try to portray the room from above and move the furniture to different positions. If you can, try to draw various styles that you could apply to the room and choose the one you prefer. Remember any restrictions you may have, such as not being allowed to paint the walls.
Step 5. Consider if you need new furniture or if you can make do with what you already have
Even after you've cleaned everything up, you may need a larger bookshelf or maybe you want to buy a new desk to do your homework. Maybe a new lamp could improve the look of the room a lot! Before making a shopping list, browse the net and you may find that many of the things you can make yourself! A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for old furniture or you may find great decorations by wandering through the flea markets.
Step 6. Rearrange the room
Following the drawings you made, arrange the furniture in different places. Right now you will be happy that you put everything away before you begin, because everything will be a huge mess until you put everything in its place. Have everything you need ready for cleaning, you will find a lot of hidden dirt by moving the furniture.
Step 7. Take a look at the walls
If you are able to paint and create your own decorations you can get a big change really cheap. In addition, you can use the art form that best suits the look you want to give the room. Seek online help to learn how to create your own work of art. If you're not exactly an artist, you can try decals.
Step 8. Take a look at the windows
Does the window treatment appear old and dull? You could replace the blinds, curtains or venetian blinds with something more colorful or simply different. It can be very inexpensive, especially if you know someone who can help you do it yourself.
Step 9. Look at the bed
The bed is the center of attention in a room and you can arrange it at low cost. Take advantage of the opportunity to change the sheets and turn the mattress. If there is a chance, you could buy a new duvet or blanket and, if you like, some decorative pillows too. Dyeing the duvet, blanket or pillows would be even cheaper. Repainting the head of the bed can be very impressive. If you keep storage boxes under the bed, buy a bedspread that reaches down to the floor to give everything a neater look.
Step 10. After taking a break or in the following days, organize the smaller things
This will give the room the final touch. After you have bought various organizers, use them to arrange everything well. The time has come to organize your closet properly, arrange your books, desk and stationery items (put them in nice and comfortable containers), various chargers, accessories and anything else that is out of place.
Step 11. Take a step back
Compare your photos. Do you have a perfect room or what? Reward yourself with something that smells good, like flowers or incense, or add the finishing touches like a framed photo of your friends.
Advice
- Try out your new decorative style by painting and coloring your ideal room on paper before tackling any real changes.
- There is often no need for a total transformation. Try painting the wall artistically or changing the bed to get a first impression, at which point you'll decide if you need to completely renovate the room.
- Sometimes all a room needs is a little tidiness. Before you start, organize and clean everything, then consider whether or not you need to completely change the room.
- Keep all cleaning accessories close at hand as you will find a lot of dirt moving around the furniture.
Warnings
- Do not touch the electrical system of the house and avoid any other potentially dangerous operation. If you want to put a new lamp or hang a picture, ask for help.
- Draw the room and try to move the drawn furniture before you push and pull the real ones around the room. When you have made up your mind and begin to move them, ask for help: the majority are certainly heavy.
