Silk roses are perfect for decorating, crafting or for embellishing clothes. This guide will teach you how to make a rose using ribbon, satin or silk (in fact, it can be done with any type of fabric, even shoelaces!). With a little experience, you will be able to create your own roses in less than 30 seconds!

Step 1. Choose the color of the fabric

Pink and red are the colors of traditional roses, but you can also choose yellow, white or black for special roses.

Step 2. Cut a strip of fabric about 20 centimeters long

It is difficult to work with shorter strips, but if it is longer it will leave the fabric left over. Since you have to cut the ribbon once the squad is complete, you can also skip this step to avoid waste.

Step 3. Fold the ribbon in half to form a corner

Step 4. Fold the bottom strip over the other strip

Now, the middle ribbon strip has become the bottom one.

Step 5. Continue folding the bottom strips over the middle one, until you have created a stack of squares

Fold the ribbon until you have a thick enough pile or continue until you are almost finished with the fabric.

Step 6. Grasp the two ends of the ribbon between your thumb and forefinger

Don't worry about the stacked ribbon - being braided, it will stretch like an accordion without coming loose.

Step 7. Take one end of the ribbon and pull it, making it slide slowly through the accordion

Be careful to hold the other end while you pull the ribbon. In this way, the ribbon folded on itself will tighten, creating a small bud of petals. Keep pulling until you have the rose of the desired size and shape, but remember not to pull too much or you may melt the rose completely.

Step 8. Gently tie a knot at the base of the rose and cut off the excess ribbon

It may be helpful to flip the rose over and hold the ribbon in place with one finger as you tie the knot. Remember not to pull too hard to avoid melting the rose.

Advice

  • If the fabric is very stiff, the petals may be pointed.
  • If the ribbon is very wide, the rose petals will be very wide. You can make very small roses using thin ribbons.
  • To finish off the rose, you can use very fine wire to tie the two ends of the ribbon, even creating a stem if you prefer. Eventually, you can cover it with duct tape for florists.
  • Make sure that the thickness of the wire is not disproportionate to the size of the rose, otherwise you will get a somewhat funny flower.
