Kids hats are a moderate difficulty project for beginners with crochet, but with a little practice you can make various shapes using just a few basic stitches.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Low Knit Cap
Step 1. Tie the yarn on the hook
Create a chain using one end of the thread.
The part of the thread not attached to the crochet will remain as a reminder and is referred to as the "tail". To make the cap you will use the other extension
Step 2. Two chain stitches
Make two chain stitches starting from the stitch on the hook.
Step 3. Form a circle
Work six single crochet stitches in the second chain stitch from the hook. This way you will have completed the first round.
Note that the second chain stitch from the hook is the stitch created by tying the yarn at the beginning
Step 4. Single crochet in each stitch
To complete the second round, make two single crochets in each stitch of the previous round.
- Once finished, you will have 12 stitches.
- Mark the last point of the round with a plastic marker. If not, use a safety pin or paper clip.
Step 5. Double crochet the third round
Single crochet in the first stitch of the previous round. Then work two in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern to complete the round, working one single crochet in each odd stitch and two in each even stitch.
- This time you will end up with 18 shirts.
- Move the marker to the last point of this round.
Step 6. Increase the measurement in the next round
Work a single single crochet in the first stitch of the previous round. Do another in the next step. In the third, work two single crochets. Repeat this pattern - a single, a single and two stitches in the same stitch continuing to the end of the round.
- Once done, you will have 24 single crochets.
- Move the marker to the last point of the round before continuing.
Step 7. Work more single stitches for the fifth round
Single crochet in each of the first three stitches of the previous round. Next, make two single crochets in the fourth stitch. Repeat until the end of the round.
- You should now have a total of 30 points.
- Mark the last stitch of the then round.
Step 8. Increase the number of points in the next four rounds
From the sixth to the ninth round you will continue to increase the points on which to work a single single crochet, alternating them with those on which you will work two stitches.
- On the sixth round, knit a single stitch in the first four stitches of the previous round, then knit two in the fifth stitch. Repeat until all the stitches are exhausted.
- On the seventh round, work a single stitch in the first five stitches of the previous round, then two single stitches in the sixth. Repeat until the end of the round.
- For the eighth round, work a single stitch in the first six stitches, then two single crochets in the seventh. Repeat this pattern.
- On the ninth round, work a single stitch in the first seven stitches, then two single crochets in the eighth stitch. Repeat until the end of the round. Note that in the end you will need to have 54 points.
- You should mark the end of each round as you work.
Step 9. Complete another 16 laps
For the remaining rounds, you will need to make a single single crochet in each stitch from the previous round.
- Each of the previous rounds must always have 54 stitches.
- Always move the marker to the last point of the previous round, to help you keep in mind where you are in the labor economy.
- Repeat this pattern for rounds 10 to 25.
Step 10. Lower
For the final round you will need to make a decrease in each of the points of the previous round.
Step 11. Tie the thread
Cut leaving a tail of 5 cm. Pull through the loop on the hook and form a knot.
Hide the tail between the shirts and you have finished the cap
Method 2 of 3: High Knit Cap
Step 1. Tie the yarn on the hook
Create a chain using one end of the thread.
The part of the thread not attached to the crochet hook is not used and is referred to as the "tail". To make the hat you will use the other end of the yarn
Step 2. Four chain stitches
Make a chain of four stitches starting from the loop created on the hook.
Step 3. Form a circle
Make a chain stitch by joining both circles of your original chain, which will be the fourth from the crochet. This way you will connect the first and last points and you will have the starting circle.
Step 4. Make a high point in the center of the ring
Make two chains. Then work 13 double crochets in the center of the circle created earlier. Make a slip stitch in the first and last stitch, thus completing the round.
Note that the first two stitches on the chain do not count on this round
Step 5. Double the treble crochets
For the second round, work two double crochets in each of the stitches from the previous round. Close with a slip stitch as before.
- Once done, you will have 26 points.
- Note that in this step you do not have to turn the piece. The points must go in the same direction as the previous ones.
Step 6. Work an alternating treble crochet pattern for the third round
Make two chain stitches, then a double crochet in the first stitch of the previous round, then two double crochets in the next one, followed by a single double crochet. For the rest of the round, double double crochet in one point, followed by a single double crochet in the next. The last stitch must consist of two double crochets.
- Once the round is complete you should have 39 stitches.
- Join the first and last stitch with a slip stitch.
Step 7. Increase the stitches in the fourth round
Chain two, then work a double crochet in each of the previous two stitches, then two double crochets in the third. Repeat this pattern until you finish with two treble crochets.
- This time you will have 52 stitches at the end of the round.
- Join the first and last with a slip stitch.
Step 8. Complete rounds 5 to 13
The pattern of each round will be exactly the same. Two chain stitches to start, then a double crochet in each stitch of the previous round. Join the first and last stitch with a slip stitch.
Each round must still have 52 stitches
Step 9. Once and continue
Two chains, then turn the work over. Continue making a double crochet in each stitch of the previous round and finish with a slip stitch.
- Rounds 15 and 16 are also worked according to this pattern, but you don't have to turn the piece.
- Each of the three rounds must remain with 52 stitches.
Step 10. Make the border
A chain stitch, then a single crochet in the first stitch of the previous round. Follow this pattern by alternating a chain stitch with a single crochet.
- Do not skip any points from the previous round.
- Join the first and last stitch with a slip stitch.
Step 11. League
Cut a 5 cm tail. Pull it through the loop on the hook and tie into a knot.
- Hide excess yarn between the stitches.
- Turn the last three rounds in double crochet to form the cuff and finish the project.
Method 3 of 3: Headphone
Step 1. Tie the yarn on the hook
Create a chain using one end of the thread.
The part of the thread that is not attached to the crochet is referred to as the "tail". To make the hat you will use the other end of the yarn
Step 2. Two chain stitches
Make two chain stitches starting with the one on the hook.
Step 3. Make half double crochet in the second chain stitch from the hook
Two chain stitches, then nine half double crochets in the second chain stitch to finish the first round.
-
To work the half double crochet:
- Pass the yarn over the hook once.
- Insert the hook in the stitch.
- Pull the yarn over the hook again.
- Pull yarn and crochet out through the stitch from the back, pulling towards you.
- Pull the yarn over the hook again.
- Pull the yarn through the three stitches you will have on the hook.
- Note that the second chain stitch from the hook is also the first one worked.
- The two chain stitches worked at the beginning of this round count as the first half double crochet. It will be valid for each round.
Step 4. Two half double crochets
Two chain stitches, then make a half double crochet in the same place you worked the chain stitch from. For the rest of the second round, work two half double crochets in each stitch of the previous round and to the end. Join the first and last stitch with a slip stitch.
At the end of the round you should have 20 points
Step 5. Alternate half double crochet in the third round
Two chain stitches and a half double crochet in the same stitch. Half double crochet in the next stitch, then two half double crochets in the next one. Repeat this alternation until the end of the round.
- Join the first and last stitch with a slip stitch.
- You should now find yourself with 30 links.
Step 6. Increase the number of stitches in the fourth round
Two chain stitches and half double crochet in the same point. Half double crochet in each of the following two stitches. For the rest of the round, alternate this count: work two half double crochets in the next stitch, followed by half double crochet in each of the two additional stitches.
- Always combine the beginning and end of the round with a slip stitch.
- At the end of the round you should have 40 stitches.
Step 7. Reduce the stitches
Two chain stitches, then for the rest of the fifth round make a half double crochet in each of the remaining 37 stitches.
You will need to finish with 38 stitches
Step 8. Turn and repeat
Flip the cap. Two chain stitches, then half double crochet in each of the 37 stitches to complete the round.
In the end you will still have 38 stitches
Step 9. Make seven rounds
Repeat the same pattern used in the previous round, from 7 to 13.
- Two chain stitches, half double crochet in each of the 37 stitches.
- Each round will always have 38 stitches.
Step 10. Single crochet in the next round
Turn the cap over and make a chain. Work a single crochet in the same stitch, then work single crochet the entire round.
- To drop in the middle of the round, work two single crochets together.
- You will get to 37 stitches.
Step 11. Fan-shaped border
A fanned edge requires a series of single crochet and treble crochet. Once worked, you will have 6 fans.
- Turn the cap over.
- One chain stitch, one single crochet in the same point. Skip two points. Work five double crochets in the next stitch, skip two more, then a single single crochet in the next stitch.
- Skip two stitches and double crochet five times in the next step. Skip two more stitches, then a single crochet. Repeat this step until you have finished all the stitches from the previous round.
Step 12. Stop the yarn
Cut a 5 cm tail. Pull it through the shirt and form a knot.
Hide the tail in the knitted stitches
Step 13. Add two ribbons
To complete the bonnet, you need to make two strings at the corners.
- Sizes two ribbons, each 50 cm long.
- Feed one end through one of the front corners of the cap. Repeat with the other ribbon.
- The bonnet is completed. Use the strings to secure the bonnet over the baby's head if necessary.
Advice
- Choose a soft yarn.
-
Note that these caps are suitable for babies up to three months of age. To make one for an older child, you will need to increase a couple of stitches at a time, so as to increase the girth as well. Make two more turns to create a taller cap.
- For a newborn, the cap circumference should be 30.5 to 35.5cm, and the height 14-15cm.
- For a 3 to 6 month old baby, the girth should be 35.5 to 43cm and the height 16.5 to 18cm.
- For a 6 to 12 month old baby, the girth will be 40.5 to 48cm, and the height should be around 19cm.
