For those of you who are interested in drawing portraits or made up faces, but have trouble recreating a realistic female eye, here's a short guide.

Steps

Step 1. Draw a long, slightly curved line

It will be the upper edge of the eye.

Step 2. Draw another one below, more curved

This is the bottom edge and the lines should come together at an angle which will be the outside of the eye. The lines in the inner corner should be slightly separated.

Step 3. Add another very curved line which will be the upper lid

Step 4. Draw the "circle" of the eye, which is made up of the iris (the outer ring) and the pupil (the black in the center)

Pay attention to details: the iris cannot be seen in full; it is partially covered by the eyelid so you get a sense of depth.

Step 5. Draw the lashes

Keep in mind that you need to draw them along the edges of both lids, thicker below rather than above. Try to keep the same distance between them and draw them at roughly the same angle. Draw the top lashes longer than the ones below

Step 6. Draw the base line of the eyebrow

It should start slightly before the inner corner and finish at the outer corner. Draw it curved as much as you want. A sharper angle opens up the eye more, but it also gives the "over-make-up" look, so try to achieve a balance (unless you're drawing elves, in which case the marked angles are just perfect).

Step 7. Add two circles, one on the iris and one on the pupil, to get the light reflection effect

You can draw them close or apart, as you like.

Step 8. Add another short, curved line at the bottom left of the inner corner that will be the outline of the nose

Step 9. Now color the inside of the eyebrow using many short curved strokes, so that they look like real hair

It should be thinner as you go to the outer corner. (Although this one came to me ugly x.x) Color the pupil and iris, leaving white the circles you drew earlier (reflection of the light). Note that the color of the iris is darker going up because the upper eyelid is shading.

Step 10. If you want to make it look like your eye is made up, color the upper lid (eye shadow effect) and darken the edges just below the lashes (eyeliner effect)

Advice

  • Remember the proportions: on a face, the space between the eyes is equal to the length of the eye, and the vertical line of the face is equal to three times the length of the nose. The ears are aligned with the nose. The length of one eye is the same as that of the lips.
  • Please keep in mind that these are just the basic steps. Feel free to modify the design in any way that seems appropriate.
