Making your own braided accessories is fun, easy, and very inexpensive. We will show you how to make your own 4 strand bracelet using embroidery thread.
Steps
Step 1. Choose your colors
You can have any number from 1 to 4. 2 colors is a pretty easy combination to work with, but have fun and be creative. You can use matte tones for an earthy look, or bright colors for a more festive feel. For this example, we will use black and blue threads.
Step 2. Cut the threads to size
To enter your wrist when finished, the strings should be a little longer than the distance between your elbow and your wrist. Separate them into groups of 3 strands by color, like this:
Step 3. Secure one end of the ropes
Tie all the cords into a knot at one end, and attach it to something solid, like a monitor or a closet drawer. You can attach it to your jeans with a pin, tie it to your big toe, or attach it to something, as long as it will stand still while you work on it.
Step 4. Begin to weave
Place the blue strings inside, and cross the left over the right. It should look like this:
Step 5. Now cross the black strings
Cross the right string over the right of the blue string, and then the left over the blue string that came from the right.
Step 6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you reach the desired length of your bracelet
This is what it should look like closely:
Step 7. Tie the end with a knot
Trim the excess string, but leave some on both sides so you can tie it around your wrist.
If you make it a little bigger, it can be an anklet too
Step 8. Finished
Advice
- Choose interesting color combinations for beautiful and unique bracelets. You can be as many different colors as you like, so let your imagination run wild.
- Remember, it's better to have extra rope than not having enough!
- For a thinner bracelet, use fewer threads, for a thicker bracelet, use more. You can also use thicker yarn in general, or combine thick and thin for more interesting looks.
- The bracelet shown here was softly woven. Depending on your preference, you can weave yours as loosely or as tightly as you want.
- You can add beads from time to time between the weaves.
- If you want to be able to slip it on your wrist without complicated steps, measure the bracelet so that it is a little wider than your wrist.
- If you don't want to attach the strings to something, just wrap them tightly enough for them to stay still, but so you can easily remove them when you're done.
