Milo chocolate, or more simply Milo, is a malt-based industrial product that allows you to prepare a very popular drink in some countries, especially in Asia, Oceania, Africa and Latin America. Its origins are Australian and it is now manufactured by Nestlé. Milo is a very versatile drink and there are many ways to prepare it, as many as there are people who drink it. This tutorial describes three common methods, as well as three popular variations, such as the frozen Milo, the Milo Dinosaur, and the Milo Godzilla.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Make a Hot Classic Milo
Step 1. Prepare the ingredients
This is the basic recipe for Milo. You can follow the instructions on the package or modify them according to your tastes. For this preparation you need:
- 3 tablespoons (45 g) of Milo powder;
- Boiling water.
- Optional ingredients: milk, cocoa, sugar or chocolate syrup.
Step 2. Heat 360ml of water
Milo does not dissolve well in cold milk, so most preparations require boiling water. You can heat it in a kettle or a suitable container in the microwave for about 1-2 minutes, until it starts to emit a trickle of steam.
Step 3. Pour the Milo powder into a regular cup
The instructions on the package indicate 45 g of product for one person, but many enthusiasts increase the doses, according to personal tastes. Start with three tablespoons and evaluate the flavor of the drink. You can add more powder later or make a stronger chocolate next time.
Step 4. Pour the boiling water and mix
First add only a few tablespoons of water and mix the powder to create a sort of paste, then pour the rest of the water to dilute it until the cup is full.
Step 5. Wait for the Milo to cool down and enjoy it
If you wish, you can add a few tablespoons of cold milk to lower the temperature of the drink and make it creamier. If you want, you can also drink it plain, but remember to wait a bit, since it consists of boiling water.
Step 6. Customize the recipe
Many people like to add special ingredients to their Milo-based “concoctions”. Start with the basic preparation so you get to know the flavor and then experiment the next time.
- Add a teaspoon or more of sugar to the cup before pouring the water, if you love sweet drinks.
- Add a teaspoon or more of cocoa or chocolate syrup if you prefer a strong flavor.
- If you want a creamy drink, replace the hot water with boiling milk. Heat it in a saucepan on the stove over medium heat until it begins to boil. You can also use the microwave and heat it for 2 minutes in a container suitable for this appliance.
Method 2 of 3: Prepare the Cold Milo
Step 1. Gather the ingredients
This variant is very popular as a breakfast for children in many areas of the world. You will need:
- 5 tablespoons (75 g) of Milo powder;
- 1 and a half tablespoons (22 ml) of sweetened condensed milk;
- Boiling water;
- Cold milk.
Step 2. Heat some water
You only need a few spoons to dissolve the Milo. Boil it in the kettle or microwave for 1-2 minutes, until steam is produced.
Step 3. Add 3-5 tablespoons of Milo to a cup
The amount of product depends on your personal tastes.
Step 4. Add boiling water to dissolve the Milo
Pour enough to cover all the powder with 2 cm of water (measuring boiling water is quite dangerous, for this step perform evaluations "by eye"). Afterwards, stir the mixture continuously until the Milo has completely dissolved.
Step 5. Add one and a half tablespoons (22 ml) of sweetened condensed milk
This sweetens the drink and makes it very smooth and creamy. Stir a little more.
Step 6. Pour in the cold milk to fill the cup
Stir the mixture once more and drink it. You can use skim or semi-skim milk, but most Milo aficionados prefer whole milk.
Method 3 of 3: Prepare the Frozen Milo and Three Variants
Step 1. Gather the ingredients
Frozen Milo is very famous and is also made in bars and even McDonalds in Singapore and Malaysia! Here are the ingredients you need:
- 3-5 tablespoons (45-75 g) of Milo powder;
- 3 tablespoons (45 g) of powdered milk;
- 1 teaspoon (5 g) of sugar;
- Boiling water;
- Ice.
- Optional ingredients: sweetened condensed milk, more Milo powder, ice cream or whipped cream, instant coffee.
Step 2. Make a simple frozen Milo
Add 3 to 5 tablespoons (45-75g) of Milo, 3 tablespoons (45g) of milk powder and one teaspoon (5g) of sugar to a glass. Then fill it halfway with boiling water and stir until the powders have completely dissolved. Add ice, mix and enjoy your refreshing drink!
You can replace the powdered milk and sugar with one and a half tablespoons (22 ml) of sweetened condensed milk
Step 3. Prepare a Milo Dinosaur
This variant originated in Singapore and is widespread.
- Make a glass of frozen Milo.
- Add two tablespoons of Milo powder to the surface without stirring. This will sink into the glass creating a very interesting crunchy texture.
Step 4. Make a Milo Godzilla
Just like the Dinosaur, this is also a variant of the frozen Milo. It is a truly delicious drink to be enjoyed on hot summer days.
- Make a glass of frozen Milo.
- Add a spoonful of vanilla ice cream or a generous amount of whipped cream.
- Sprinkle more Milo powder on the surface to create a beautiful and crunchy decoration.
Step 5. Prepare a Milo NesLo
After all these milk and chocolate delights, you may be wondering if there is room for coffee. Well yes, here is the answer: the Milo NesLo. You can add coffee to any Milo-based drink, but NesLo is the most popular version.
- Prepare a normal frozen Milo, but add a sachet of instant coffee to the mixture before pouring the boiling water.
- The original recipe indicates the Nescafé brand for instant coffee (hence the name NesLo), but you can use any other product of your choice or a cup of espresso.
