The party supplies are ready, but want to add a truly unique touch? Instead of serving your guests the usual selection of beers and wines why not turn a watermelon into a keg from which to tap your favorite cocktail? Your idea will be the subject of many future conversations and you will get a really delicious result.
Steps
Step 1. Wash the watermelon
Rub it carefully and then pat it dry. Make sure you remove any dirt from the surface, this way it will be ready to be carved and decorated.
Step 2. Draw the line of the cut
Draw a circle around the circumference of one end of the watermelon. At that point you will form the top cap. If you want to do accurate work you can use a drawing compass or just try to be as precise as possible.
Step 3. Draw the decorations
With a pencil or felt-tip pen, draw drawings on the watermelon. If you want, with the help of a vegetable peeler or a small knife, remove part of the peel to create drawings. Remember that you will fill the watermelon up to 3/4 full.
Step 4. Remove the top end of the watermelon
Keep the cap, you will use it after pouring the cocktail inside. Use a sharp knife or utility knife and make a clean cut in the watermelon. Follow the lines drawn earlier to make this easier.
Step 5. Remove the cap gently
Clean it of any pulp residue and set it aside.
Step 6. Empty the watermelon from the pulp
Spread out some newspaper to avoid dirtying the underlying surface! Alternatively, place the watermelon directly in the sink. Empty it with a large spoon or ice cream scoop and extract as much pulp as you can.
Be careful not to scrape the peel excessively. Try not to dent the bottom end and the walls
Step 7. Store the pulp
Try to remove it in large chunks so you can eat it later for a snack or dip it in your cocktail.
Step 8. Clean and even out the inside walls of the watermelon using a damp paper towel
You will need to be able to make the inner surface as smooth as possible.
Step 9. Create your keg on tap
Make a hole in the bottom of the watermelon using a nipple remover. The hole will need to be placed at a distance of about 5 - 7.5 cm from the base of the watermelon. In this way it will be possible to place a glass under the tap / tap.
- Give the hole the same size as the tap. You will need to place it firmly inside the watermelon peel, in the hole made with the oil remover. It is important that there is no space between the tap and the peel otherwise the liquid could leak.
- If the stapler is sufficiently sharp or pointed you can try to insert it directly into the skin of the watermelon, if necessary also help with the oil remover. This way the tap should adhere better to the fruit.
Step 10. Fill the watermelon with your favorite drink
A watermelon-based recipe, or one that needs to be infused with watermelon, is ideal, but don't limit your imagination.
Step 11. Take a little test
Pour a couple of cups of liquid into your fruit keg to see if there are any leaks around the tap. If so, plug the holes with bits of peel or wrap duct tape around the faucet while it is placed in the watermelon. If necessary, pin and hold the tape in place. The surface of the melon may in fact be too smooth to allow it to adhere.
Step 12. Add some pulp
When you prepare your cocktail, add some watermelon pulp. The flavor will be more intense and the taste excellent. Let the pieces of pulp float inside your creation and place some in the glass for decoration.
Step 13. Put your draft watermelon in plain sight
Decorate it with other colorful fruit, such as apples, strawberries, or apricots. Attach the pieces of fruit to the watermelon with the help of toothpicks or wooden skewers.
