This article explains how to optimize the data connection speed of an iOS device. There are several steps that can help you improve the data connection speed of your iPhone or iPad.
Steps
Step 1. Use a Wi-Fi connection instead of a cellular data connection
In general, Wi-Fi connections are faster than cellular data connections. Use the Wi-Fi connection in all the places you visit, where it is available. Read this article to find out how to connect your iPhone or iPad to a Wi-Fi network or follow these simple instructions:
- Launch the app Settings;
- Tap the item Wifi;
- Activate the "Wi-Fi" slider;
- Select the Wi-Fi network to connect to;
- Enter the password to access the Wi-Fi network.
Step 2. Use 4G cellular networks
Unfortunately, Wi-Fi will not be available in all places you visit. Sometimes you will be forced to use the cellular data connection. In these cases, the current standard of cellular networks is 4G which offers the fastest data transfer speed. Follow these instructions to select 4G networks:
- Launch the app Settings;
- Select the item Mobile phone;
- Choose the option Cellular data options;
- Select the item 4G.
Step 3. Activate the "Enable LTE" slider
While 4G cellular networks are those that offer the highest data transfer speed, the term LTE (from the English "Long Term Evolution") indicates the latest standard for cellular networks that allows you to actually reach the speeds guaranteed by a 4G connection. When your iOS device is connected to a 4G LTE network, you can be sure of consistently reaching the maximum data transfer speed compared to when using a normal 4G connection. From the "Cellular Data Options" menu of the "Settings" app, turn on the "Enable LTE" slider.
If the 4G LTE network is not available for the type of tariff plan associated with your mobile number, contact your carrier to make the necessary changes
Step 4. Turn off background app refresh
This feature allows apps running in the background to update their content every few seconds. Disabling the "Refresh app in background" option can help to increase the speed of your data connection for the apps you are actually using. Follow these instructions to disable the "Background App Refresh" feature:
- Launch the app Settings;
- Choose the voice General;
- Select the option Refresh apps in the background;
- Tap the item Refresh apps in the background displayed at the top of the screen;
-
Select the option Deactivate.
You can disable this feature only for some specific applications, listed in the "Refresh background app" menu, by deactivating the corresponding slider
Step 5. Turn off automatic downloads
This feature uses a large amount of the internet connection bandwidth limiting its overall speed. Follow these instructions:
- Launch the app Settings;
- Tap your Apple ID and profile picture displayed at the top of the screen;
- Select the item iTunes Store and App Store;
- Disable the item cursors Music, App, Books and audiobooks And Updates.
Step 6. Update your device with the latest iOS version available
iOS is the operating system used by the iPhone and iPad. Keeping the device's operating system up-to-date allows you to solve any problems related to security and network connectivity that could have a negative impact on the data transfer speed. Follow these instructions to update your device:
- Launch the app Settings;
- Choose the voice General;
- Tap the option Software update;
- Select the item Download and install.
Step 7. Reset the network connection
Deactivating and reactivating the network connection (Wi-Fi or cellular data) restores the initial settings and can temporarily improve the data transfer speed. The simplest way to do this is to turn on Airplane Mode for about 20 seconds and then turn it off. Follow these instructions:
- Swipe your finger up on the screen starting from the bottom side;
- Tap the airplane icon;
- Wait about 20 seconds;
- Tap the airplane icon again.
Step 8. Restart the iPhone or iPad
If the problems persist while using your iOS device, try restarting it to restore the operating system to its initial conditions and normalize the situation. To restart the iPhone or iPad, press and hold the "Power" button located in the upper right corner of the device. At this point, slide the shutdown slider to the right when it appears. Wait about 20 seconds after the device has completely shut down, then press the "Power" button again to turn it on.
Step 9. Restart the network router
If you are having problems with the Wi-Fi connection of your home LAN, it is possible that the cause is one of the network devices. Restarting the modem / router may resolve all problems. To restart the router, unplug the power cord for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and wait about 1 minute for it to complete the startup process.
