If you use Skype a lot, you'd probably like to hear from conversations you have at times. These can be fun or exciting moments, but still important to you. Learn to keep the most beautiful conversations by recording images and audio. Follow these instructions to install the right program and learn how to save your conversations.
Steps
Step 1. Download an application to make registrations
Skype allows you to install external software that adds many useful features to the program. Skype does not have any pre-installed application to record calls, so in order to do this you need to download a special software. You can access the application list by clicking on the "Tools" menu, going to "Applications" and selecting "Search for applications".
- The Skype store will open in a new browser window.
- Search for "recorder" in the search field, or scroll down and select one of the "Call recording" categories.
- There are generally two choices when it comes to recording software: audio only or audio and video. If you want to record video calls as well, be sure to choose an audio-video recorder.
- Many of the more complete and professional applications are paid, but you can find basic audio and video recorders that are completely free. Read the reviews and product features carefully before making your choice.
- Always check the system requirements before installing the program. Many applications don't work with older versions of Mac OS X or Linux.
- You can find programs to record calls even outside the Skype store. Type in the search engine: "software to record calls on Skype". The instructions for installing it should be similar to those described below.
Step 2. Install the application
Once you have found the desired application, click on the "Download now" button. You will be redirected to the program developer's site, where you can download the app. Once the download is complete, open the file to start the installation.
- The installation procedure is different for each application, but it is generally recommended to leave the default settings. Beware of software that tries to install new toolbars on your browser, as it may be difficult to remove them later.
- Most applications at some point ask you to register by entering your Skype username. If you do not enter it correctly, the application will not work.
- When you have finished the installation, Skype will ask you to authorize access to the software. If you do not allow access, the application will not be able to log anything.
Step 3. Configure the application
Depending on the application used, the recordings can be kept on the local computer, or they can be uploaded to a cloud service. You can also adjust the quality of the recording.
- Almost all recording programs give you the option to choose where to save the audio and video files you have recorded. Create a folder on your PC that is easy to access, especially if you intend to have those files always at hand.
- The audio and video quality can usually be adjusted from the application's "Settings" menu. Higher quality files take up more space on your computer, so adjust your settings until you find the right space-quality balance.
Step 4. Record the call
Many applications have a record button ("Record" or "Record") that you need to click to start. You can do this when the Skype call is already in progress: the recording will start from the moment you pressed the button. To stop recording, click the record button again.
- Some applications start recording automatically as soon as the call begins. Read the software instructions for more information.
- Most free apps place a limit on the length of calls you can record.
Step 5. Tell the other person that you are recording the call
In many countries, recording a call without the other person's consent is illegal, so always warn the other person that you are recording. If he does not give his consent, immediately stop recording or end the call.
Advice
- To complete your Skype calls, you may need Skype credits. Before calling and recording your conversations, make sure you have enough credits; otherwise, there may be technical problems with your calls, such as delays or interruptions.
- Before recording your first important call, do a test recording to verify that both Skype and the recording software are working properly. Call a friend and record the call, then listen to it again to make sure everything is okay.
- Always transfer the files you have recorded even on external media to your computer, such as hard drives or flash drives. If anything happens to your PC, you will lose invaluable documents forever.
- Before recording a call, always ask permission from your interlocutor.
