Dressing up as a chicken is surprisingly fun for both small and big kids, and even adults. You too can wrap yourself in feathers for a day, and perfect your "chicken dance". Make a chicken costume consisting of a feathered jumpsuit, a chicken hat, and a pair of yellow legs.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Making the Jumpsuit
Step 1. Find two white leotards with long sleeves
For a lightweight swimsuit, you can limit yourself to just one leotard. To dress up as a more "chubby" chicken, you will need two.
Step 2. Take one of the two leotards
Wrap 3-4 white feather boas all around the leotard. Start at the back of the neck, and attach a boa to the fabric with safety pins.
- Leave a few centimeters between one strip and the other of the buoy, so that there is space to then fill the costume with cotton wool.
- At the same time, try to wrap the spiral boa strips as close to each other as possible, so as to make your costume compact.
- If you want a more resistant swimsuit that lasts longer, sew the boas to the leotard.
Step 3. Find a bright yellow tights to wear under the leotard
Choose heavy or opaque tights so you don't see the skin underneath.
Step 4. Before getting dressed, put on the other leotard, the one without feathers
For a "chubby" effect, wrap your torso with several layers of wadding. Then put on the feathered leotard over the layers of wadding.
Part 2 of 3: Making the Chicken Hat
Step 1. Find a white pilot's cap, the kind that tie under the chin
Instead of this DIY pattern, you can also buy a pre-made chicken hat.
Step 2. Print a chicken crest template, like the one you find on this site:
-
If you prefer, you can draw one freehand.
Step 3. Fold a scrap of felt in half by about 30 centimeters
Outline the pattern on the fabric using a fabric pen. Cut out the remnant folded in half, following the contours of the model.
Step 4. Line up the two pieces of felt with the outer side turned inside out
Sew around the perimeter of the top edge of the crest, leaving the base free. When you are done, turn the crest upside down, bringing the outer side out.
Step 5. Line the crest with cotton wool, and attach it to the top of the pilot's cap
While sewing the crest to the hat, take the opportunity to sew any uncovered edge. The chicken crest should be fixed vertically from the front center to the back center of the hat, like a punk crest.
Once attached, the wadding will keep it stiff. If it hangs to one side, add some cotton wool to the filling before you finish sewing
Part 3 of 3: Making the Paws
Step 1. Find a pair of yellow rubber gloves
If the costume is for a child, you can use a small pair. If, on the other hand, it is for an adult, you will need extra large gloves.
Step 2. Pad the fingers of the gloves with cotton wool
They must stick out very straight.
Step 3. Slip a sneaker-like sneaker inside each glove
The toe of the shoe should be flush with the fingers of the glove. A pair of Converse or Keds sneakers will do just fine for this costume.
Step 4. Pull the base of the glove as far as you can, so that the fingers arch a little
This will allow you not to stumble while wearing the costume.
Step 5. Cut a small slit just above the shoelaces
Pull the laces out of the slot so you can fasten them.
Step 6. Collect the leftover gum all around the shoe
Compact it well as if you were making a nice tight package. Glue the flaps together with strong grip glue.
- Let the "gloved" shoes dry overnight.
- Try not to glue the shoes to the gloves, to be able to easily disassemble the costume, and recover the shoes.
Step 7. Put your "gloved" shoes over the yellow leotard
Take a loop around the ankles with another small strip of feather boa, securing it firmly at the back.
