Contemporary dance is a joyful way of expressing oneself through movement. If you want to learn, you will need to find a good dance school and spend some time researching the style that suits you best.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Dance Lessons
Step 1. Join a local contemporary dance school that offers courses for your age
If there were no contemporary dance classes, consider taking lyric dance classes, a style not very dissimilar from contemporary.
- Find a good school that has schedules compatible with your schedule, that is close to home, and at a cost that you can afford.
- Ask for a trial class or lessons. It is important that you feel comfortable in the classroom and that you strike up an understanding with the teacher.
Part 2 of 3: Develop your movement skills
Step 1. The key is to become as flexible as possible
Contemporary dancers need to be flexible in order to perform leaps and leaps and many other movements. So do some stretching exercises in the morning and evening, slowly and little by little, and learn how to do the splits. With time and consistency you will become more flexible.
Do some stretching exercises before each class
Step 2. After class, continue practicing at home
Choose the moves you don't do particularly well and keep repeating them. Any movement you learn will come in handy if you have to perform in a choreographic piece. But even if this isn't expected, learning all the basic movements will help you tackle the more complex ones.
Part 3 of 3: Learning from Others
Step 1. Make friends with other dancers and exchange tips with each other
The group is an important source of information and can help you become a good dancer.
-
See how other contemporary dancers move and learn from them. How do they stretch the foot? How do they raise their legs? Don't be afraid to ask!
- If you want to copy others but don't know how to do it, ask someone for help.
Step 2. Practice whenever you can
The best results are obtained with regular daily practice.
Advice
- Stretching exercises performed with the support of a wall help improve flexibility.
- Do stretching exercises twice a day and you will become more flexible.
- Look for suggestions from your classmates and teachers.
Warnings
- Before each lesson remember to do some stretching exercises for each part of the body, otherwise you run the risk of hurting yourself! Exercise the neck, shoulders, wrists, arms and legs, contemporary dance requires the movements of all parts of the body!
- Don't overdo it, especially if you are a beginner, otherwise you could get hurt.
