A well ventilated mattress reduces the formation of germs and bacteria. You can air a mattress at home once a week or you can do it outdoors all year round and the winter air is also suitable for killing insects. This article explains how to ventilate a mattress.
Steps
Step 1. Remove the blankets and sheets from the mattress to let it breathe
Do this every week for at least an hour, leaving the mattress completely clear. Remove all clothes, sheets and pillows from the mattress to make it breathe well and keep it in direct contact with the air. If possible, open the windows and expose the mattress to the sun.
- This is the perfect time to wash your sheets and blankets. It is recommended to wash the sheets and pillow covers every week, while for blankets and other heavy layers it is sufficient to wash them every three months.
- Wash the mattress cover every 1-3 months depending on how dirty it is.
Step 2. If you are allergic to dust, vacuum the mattress regularly
Doing this weekly or monthly will help you remove dust and reduce mites.
Step 3. Air the mattress outdoors 1 or 2 times throughout the year
Get help to move it outdoors. Make sure it's a sunny day, both summer and winter.
If there is snow on the ground, use a waterproof sheet under the mattress. A damp mattress is not comfortable at all and promotes the development of mold
Step 4. Leave the mattress in the sun for at least 3-4 hours, but better still do it for 6 hours
-
Do not leave the mattress outside in the evening or it will get damp. Put it back in a cool, clean place before the sun goes down.
- If you do this in the winter, bring the mattress back in when the sun hides behind trees, hills or buildings, as it will get cold very quickly.
Step 5. If you can't move your mattress outdoors, let it air out with the windows open to the sun
Advice
- Immediately clean stains and burns on the mattress.
- Use a cover to protect the mattress from stains and spilled drinks. Liquid resistant mattresses are now also available.
