Spilling food and drink can be an embarrassing but sometimes seemingly unavoidable situation. You may have shaking hands and have difficulty gripping cups and glasses without spilling their contents, or simply you may have had too many recent accidents. This article will show you how to avoid spilling food and drink while walking with a cup, glass or plate.
Steps
Step 1. Walk slowly
Scientists claim that a cup of coffee is the exact size needed to create a wave as we walk. The faster we walk, the faster and more intense the waves will be. You know what would happen to your next coffee! By walking slower, we reduce the resonance, allowing our drinks to stay in place.
Step 2. Watch your drink
Focus the sight on your drink, not your feet. Focusing on your drink will not only help you walk slower, it will allow you to make any adjustments in case of an emergency.
Step 3. Don't rush
The slower you move, the less wobbles and fluid leaks out of your cup. By avoiding rushing from one place to another, it will be easier to keep the liquid inside the glass, avoiding spilling it on the ground. Be careful of the people around you, even a simple bump or movement that is too fast could cause an accident.
Step 4. Hold the plate or glass with both hands
It will be easier to have control over it. Instead of carrying multiple things in multiple hands, take a second spin.
Step 5. Do not carry anything on an empty stomach
If you are going to an event where it will not be possible to eat, have a snack, eat some fruit or drink a juice before going out. Carrying food and drink on an empty stomach comes with extra difficulty.
Step 6. Get to know and distinguish your hands
If you have to carry a drink, use your less shaky hand. If you carry a plate with both hands, take control of it with the firmer one and use the other as a support.
Step 7. Know your limits
If your hands are shaking it will be nearly impossible to carry soup on a bar tray. Avoid it or dip bread into the liquid.
Step 8. During transport, place your forearm under the tray
The forearm could be much more stable than the hands. Do not carry glasses and drinks that are too tall or hold both the tray and the drink with one hand.
Advice
- Before experimenting in public, test your techniques at home.
- If all techniques fail, ask someone for help and let them carry your food and drinks for you.
- Do not fill the glass to the brim. Leave room for the inevitable swings.
- Use a cup with a lid, especially when carrying hot coffee. Spilling a fizzy drink on yourself is no fun, but a hot drink could burn you severely.
- Put a spoon in the glass. It will act as a deflector, mitigating the oscillations of the liquid.
