This article explains how to download Microsoft Excel on a computer, smartphone or tablet. While Microsoft Excel can only be downloaded on a computer as an integral part of the Microsoft Office suite, on iOS and Android mobile devices it is possible to download the single application. Remember that you need a Microsoft account to be able to purchase and use Office 365 on your computer.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Use Office 365 on Computer
Step 1. Sign up for an Office 365 subscription
Before you can download Microsoft Excel and start using it, you'll need to purchase a subscription that will give you access to Office 365.
If you want, you can try Office 365 for free for one month by downloading the free version
Step 2. Log in to your Office account page
Visit the URL https://www.office.com/myaccount/ using your computer browser. If you are already logged in, your Office subscription page will appear.
If you are not logged in, you will need to do so now by entering your email address and password when prompted
Step 3. Click the Install> button
It is orange in color and located on the left side of the page.
Step 4. Click the Install button
It is located on the right side of the page. The Office 365 installation file will be downloaded to your computer.
Depending on your browser settings, you may need to select the download destination folder or confirm your action
Step 5. Install Office 365
The procedure to follow varies depending on the operating system installed on your computer. Double-click the Office installation file, then follow these instructions:
- Windows - click the button Yup when prompted, then wait for the Office installation to finish. When prompted, click on the button Close to complete the installation.
- Mac - click the button Continues, click the button again Continues, click on the button I accept, click on the button Continues, click on the item Install, enter your Mac login password, click on the option Install Software, then click the button Close when required.
Step 6. Start Excel
Microsoft Excel, on a computer, is installed as one of the components of the Office 365 suite, so when the installation is complete, follow these instructions to locate and start the program:

Windows - access the menu Start by clicking on the icon
then type the keyword excel to make the Excel icon appear in the list of results that will be displayed in the "Start" menu.

Mac - click on the search bar icon of Spotlight
then type the keyword excel to make the Excel icon appear in the list of results.
Method 2 of 4: Using the Trial Version on a Computer
Step 1. Go to the Office free trial web page
Visit the URL https://products.office.com/it-it/try using your computer browser. This way, you can use Excel for a full month for free by downloading the trial version of Office 365.
Step 2. Click the Try it free for 1 month button
It is located on the left side of the page.
Step 3. Sign in with your Microsoft account when prompted
Provide your profile email address and password.
If you've already signed in with your Microsoft account recently, you may not need to sign in again
Step 4. Click the Next button
It is displayed at the bottom of the page.
Step 5. Select a payment method
Click on the option Credit or debit card to be able to enter the details of your payment card or choose one of the other options available (for example PayPal) in the "Choose a payment method" section.
Microsoft will not charge you for downloading Office 365, but you will be billed for one year of subscription to the product at the end of the free trial month
Step 6. Enter the information of the selected payment method
Fill in the required fields based on the chosen payment method. If you have chosen to use a payment card, you will need to provide a billing address, card number, expiration date, and so on.
If you have chosen a payment method other than a credit or debit card, follow the instructions that will appear on the screen to enter all the necessary information
Step 7. Scroll down the page and click the Next button
It is located at the bottom of the page. You will be redirected to a summary page.
If you have not chosen to pay by credit or debit card, you may need to enter your billing information and click the button Come on before you can continue.
Step 8. Click the Buy button
It is located at the bottom of the page. At this point, you will be redirected to the web page for your Office account.
Step 9. Download and install Office 365
Follow these instructions:
- Click on the Install> button located on the left side of the page;
- Click on the button Install visible on the right side of the page;
- Once the download is complete, double-click the Office 365 installation file;
- Follow the instructions that will appear on the screen to complete the installation.
Step 10. Cancel your Office 365 subscription before your free trial month expires
If you don't intend to pay for your annual Office 365 subscription when the trial month expires, follow these instructions:
- Visit the web page https://account.microsoft.com/services/ and log in if required;
- Scroll down the page and click on the item Payments and billing that you find in the "Office 365" section;
- Click on the button Cancel placed on the right side of the page;
- Click on the button Confirm cancellation when required.
Method 3 of 4: iOS devices
Step 1. Access the App Store from the iPhone by tapping the icon
It is characterized by the white letter "A" placed on a light blue background.
Step 2. Select the Search tab
It features a magnifying glass and is located in the lower right corner of the screen.
Step 3. Tap the search bar
It is visible at the top of the screen. The virtual keyboard of the device will appear on the screen.
Step 4. Search for the Excel app
Type the keyword excel, then select the entry excel from the list of results that appeared. You will be redirected to the App Store page for the Microsoft Excel application.
Step 5. Press the Get button
It is located to the right of the Excel logo.

If you have already downloaded Excel before, tap the icon
to download again.
Step 6. Authenticate with Touch ID
Scan your fingerprints to confirm your action. The Microsoft Excel app will be installed on the device.
If your iPhone isn't compatible with Touch ID (or if you haven't configured this feature to make purchases from the App Store), you'll need to enter your Apple ID password when prompted
Method 4 of 4: Android devices
Step 1. Access the Google Play Store from your Android device by tapping the icon
It is characterized by a multicolored triangle placed on a white background.
Step 2. Tap the search bar
It is visible at the top of the screen. The virtual keyboard of the device will be displayed.
If you see a Play Strore tab other than the one named Games, touch the item Games located at the top of the screen before selecting the search bar.
Step 3. Go to the Play Store page dedicated to the Excel app
Type in the keyword excel, then select the option Microsoft Excel listed in the search results list (it will feature the green and white Excel logo). In this way, you will be redirected to the Play Store page dedicated to the Microsoft Excel app.
Step 4. Press the Install button
It is located at the top right of the page. The Microsoft Excel application will then be downloaded and installed on the device.
