This article explains how to download and install Microsoft Word on a computer, smartphone or tablet. If you're using a desktop or laptop platform, Microsoft Word is available as part of the Microsoft Office suite of programs. Since Microsoft Office is a paid product, you have a free 30-day trial period of the full version of the program during which you will not incur any costs.
Steps
Method 1 of 5: Purchase Office 365
Step 1. Access the website https://products.office.com/it-it/word using an internet browser
The web page for the Microsoft Word program will be displayed.
- Microsoft Word cannot be purchased as a separate product, but only as part of the program package called Microsoft Office.
- If you need to find a permanent solution, but don't want to buy Microsoft Office, scroll down to the end of the article and read the "Free alternatives" section.
Step 2. Click the Try Free button
A drop-down menu will appear.
If you are not interested in the 30 day free trial period, click on the button Buy now.
Step 3. Click For Home
If you clicked the button Buy now, the list of different purchase options will be displayed. In this case, click the button Buy now corresponding to the version of Office you want to purchase. The chosen product will be added to your cart. Now click the button Complete the purchase and jump directly to step number 5.
Step 4. Click the 1 Month Free Trial button
This way you have the opportunity to try all the features of Office 365 for free for one month before making your purchase.
Even though the trial period is completely free, you will still need to enter your credit card information before you can download the application. You will not be charged any fees during the free trial period
Step 5. Sign in with your Microsoft account
Follow the on-screen instructions to log in. If you don't have an account, follow the steps to create one.
Step 6. Add a payment method
Click the link Add a payment method (or access the "Payment method" drop-down menu if present), choose the payment method you prefer, then follow the on-screen instructions to enter the relevant information.
Step 7. Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed with the Office download
Once you have successfully added an active payment method, you will be able to download the Office installation file to your computer or Mac. Once the download is complete, the file should be stored in your "Downloads" folder.
Step 8. Run the installation file and follow the instructions that appear on the screen
If you are using a computer with a Windows operating system, the installation wizard will start automatically. If you are using a Mac, double-click on the file whose name begins with "Microsoft Office" and ends with the extension ".pkg", located inside the folder Download, then follow the onscreen instructions.
Step 9. Cancel the free trial period before the natural expiration (optional step)
If you are not planning to purchase Microsoft Office, be sure to cancel your free trial period before a month passes to avoid being billed for the package you have chosen to purchase. Follow these instructions:
- Access the following URL https://account.microsoft.com/services and log in;
- Click the link Cancel for the free trial period of the Office 365 product and follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
Method 2 of 5: Download and Reinstall Office 365 or Office 2019
Step 1. Access the website https://www.office.com/ using an internet browser
Use this method if you have already purchased a version of Microsoft Office 365 or Microsoft Office 2019 and need to download the installation file again.
If you are not logged in yet, please log in now using the account with which you purchased the version of Microsoft Office
Step 2. Click the Install Office button or Install the Office apps.
The option you will have depends on the type of account you are logged in with.
Step 3. Click the Install button or select the item Office.
Again, depending on the type of account you are using, you will see different options.
If you have subscribed to one of the versions of Office 365 you may need to click the button Install before the indicated options appear on the screen.
Step 4. Follow the instructions given to you to download the program installation file
You may need to press the button for the download to actually start OK or Save.
Step 5. Install Microsoft Office
- If you are using a computer with a Windows operating system, the installation wizard will start automatically. Follow each instruction provided to complete the installation procedure.
- If you are using a Mac, go to the "Downloads" folder and double-click on the installation file (the name of the latter starts with the word "Microsoft" and ends with the extension ".pkg"). At this point, follow the instructions that appear on the screen to reinstall the various applications.
Method 3 of 5: Download Word to iPhone or iPad
Step 1. Access the App Store by tapping the icon
It is normally visible within one of the pages that make up the Home of the device.

Step 2. Tap Search
It is located in the lower right corner of the screen.
Step 3. Type the Microsoft word keywords into the search bar that appears, then press the Search key on the virtual keyboard
The search results list will be displayed.
Step 4. Press the Get button located next to the "Microsoft Word" app
The latter is characterized by a blue icon inside which there is a white page and the letter "W". The Word app will be downloaded and installed on your iPhone or iPad.
If prompted, verify your identity using Touch ID or another method of your choice, then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process
Step 5. Start Microsoft Word
Once the app has finished downloading, the corresponding icon will automatically be added to the device's Home. Tap it to launch the application.
Method 4 of 5: Download Word to an Android Device
Step 1. Access the Google Play Store by tapping the icon
It is normally visible within one of the pages that make up the Home of the device or within the "Applications" panel.

This is not a version that includes all the features of the complete Office package (which can be purchased for a fee), but it is still equipped with most of the most commonly used tools. Step 2. Download free alternative programs
Some of the best Microsoft Office-like program suites for home, school, or small business use are completely free, and nearly all of them are capable of opening, editing, and saving Microsoft Word documents. While this type of program may not have all the features offered by Microsoft Office, it is normally able to perform all the tasks required by ordinary users, such as managing a text document, being able to work on a spreadsheet or create a presentation. Here are some of the more popular and used Microsoft Office alternatives:
