Global Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a packet-based file transfer protocol that is used for wireless services on cell phones and mobile internet devices. This means that the data is separated into packets which in turn are sent through different internet channels, and then put back together once they arrive at their final destination. With GPRS, data transfers are much faster than with mobile communication services and those who use GPRS have an uninterrupted internet connection on all mobile devices. GPRS services allow the download of MP3s, videos, games, animations, wallpapers and more. Each mobile service provider has different guidelines for activating GPRS, so follow the appropriate method based on your provider. Phones with SIM are sometimes already natively enabled for GPRS, while for others it is necessary to request the activation of the service. Follow these steps to find out how to activate GPRS on your mobile too.
Steps
Step 1. Find out if your SIM phone has GPRS compatibility
You cannot activate GPRS on an incompatible phone. If you don't have a compatible phone, the only solution is to buy a compatible one.
Step 2. Opt for a GPRS compatible mobile rate plan
GPRS is available in over 200 countries. Look for a phone service that provides GPRS rate plans.
Step 3. Contact your service provider and ask for instructions
Customer service should be able to guide you through the steps required to activate GPRS services on your phone. To activate the GPRS service you will usually have to follow one of the following steps:
- Call your service provider's automatic GPRS activation service using the appropriate number.
- Send an SMS to request the activation of GPRS. The text message will contain a number or a secret word provided by the service provider.
- Access the GPRS settings through your phone menu if possible. From here you can check the GPRS service settings and in some cases access GPRS applications directly, depending on your phone model or service provider.
