While off-the-shoulder tops are fashionable and fun to wear, it can be difficult to keep them in place. Choosing a top that fits behind your shoulders and that allows you to move your arms smoothly will help you prevent it from moving too much. If your top tends to rise over your arms, all you need are safety pins and hair ties. Tying one of these rubber bands at the top, right under the armpits, will allow you to wear it without any problems.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Choosing the Right Size
Step 1. Choose a top that fits comfortably over your shoulders
You certainly don't want to choose one that is too tight, nor one that is too wide that you will just continually pull up. Choose a top that fits well over your shoulders, that sits up without bothering you.
- Always try on the top, to see if it fits you. Place it over your shoulders the way you would like to wear it and then move your arms up and down. If it slips on your arms, then it's not the right size.
- If you're buying one online, read the reviews to see if it fits perfectly. Try it on as soon as it arrives, but be careful not to remove the tags until you are sure you keep it.
Step 2. Make sure the top allows you to move your arms
If not, it's not the right fit. You certainly don't want to have to keep your arms at your sides, and if it's that tight, the sleeves will still shift with every slightest movement. When trying on a off-the-shoulder top, move your arms to try it on before making a decision.
Step 3. Find a bra that goes well with your off-the-shoulder top.
Such a top often calls for a strapless bra. If you don't already have the right bra, look for a nude one that you can wear with anything.
If necessary, you can fasten the top to the bra using safety pins from the inside
Part 2 of 2: Using Pins and Hair Bands
Step 1. Get four safety pins and two hair ties; you will need to hold the top in place
The pins don't need to be too big - just enough to attach to a hair elastic. The rubber bands should be soft if you have any, as they need to fit under the arms. Alternatively, you can use rubber bands, which are not as comfortable as rubber bands.
Step 2. Attach two safety pins to each end of the hair tie
Open a pin and attach it to one end of the elastic. Take the other pin and attach it to the other end of the elastic, making sure both pins are closed before attaching them to the top.
Step 3. Snap a safety pin inside your shirt in front of your armpit
When both pins are attached to the hair elastic, attach a pin to the inside of the shirt. Do this while you're not wearing the shirt to avoid pricking yourself. You should choose a spot that is not visible, such as inside a seam or near the elastic. Attach the safety pin to the front of the top, near the armpit.
Step 4. Attach the other pin to the wrong side of the shirt behind the armpit
Take the other pin attached to the elastic and pin it to the back of the shirt, behind the armpit. Make sure both pins are securely attached to the fabric. The hair tie should be placed between the front and back of the shirt.
Step 5. Repeat the process with the two safety pins and a hair tie on the other side of the shirt
When you've secured the first side of the top, repeat the same process on the other side. Use the last two pins to attach a hair elastic under the other arm of the top. Do not wear the top until all the pins and both elastics are attached.
Step 6. Tuck your arms over the elastic so that the rubber bands are under your armpits
When both bands are securely attached to the top, it's time to put it on. Slip your arm over the elastic so that it falls under your armpit.
