Dyeing your hair blue is a fun way to get out of the usual routine. Before dyeing them, it is important that you lighten them as much as possible, so that the color takes root more easily. Then you can proceed with the dye and use special techniques to make the color bright and long-lasting.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Lighten Hair
Step 1. Start with a cleansing shampoo
The use of the purifying shampoo helps to eliminate the residues that accumulate on the scalp and facilitates the application of the dye. It is also used to remove traces of the last dye you made. You can find it in perfumery and in some pharmacies.
Follow the instructions written on the package. You should be able to use it like a regular shampoo
Step 2. Use a hair color remover (or hair pickle remover) to remove the residue of old dyes
This product can be used to prepare your hair for a new dye if there are still residues of the old one. However it is not able to bleach the hair; at the limit it could lighten them slightly. However, if your hair remains dark, you will need to bleach it.
- Follow the instructions on the packaging of your hair color remover;
- You can buy it complete with kit in perfumery;
- In the kit box you will find two components that you will need to mix, obtaining a mixture to be applied all over the hair;
- After applying the product, leave it on for the indicated time, then rinse;
- If the residues of the old dye are particularly abundant, you may have to apply the product a second time to remove them all.
Step 3. If the hair remains dark, bleach it
If your hair remains dark even after applying the hair color remover, you have to bleach it to be sure that after dyeing it will turn out to be a nice blue color. You can do it at home with a kit that you buy at a pharmacy or perfumery, or you can have it done by a hairdresser.
- Buy a specific bleaching kit to prepare your hair for the color.
- If you have never bleached your hair on your own, a hairdresser should do it.
Step 4. Repair damaged hair using a restructuring conditioner
After applying the hair color remover and bleach, the hair could be dry and damaged. To remedy at least some of the damage done, you can use a protein treatment or restructuring conditioner.
- Follow the instructions on the package. Apply the restructuring conditioner to clean, damp hair and let it work for a few minutes before rinsing.
- To allow your hair to recover from the use of chemicals, it may be necessary to wait a few days before proceeding with the dye.
Part 2 of 3: Dyeing the Hair
Step 1. Protect your skin and clothes
Before proceeding with the dye, put on an old shirt that you don't mind getting dirty. Then wrap a towel or gown around your neck to protect your skin from the product and put on a pair of rubber gloves to avoid staining your hands.
- You can also apply a layer of petroleum jelly along the hairline and behind the ears, again to prevent the dye from staining the skin.
- However, keep in mind that if you come into contact with the product through your skin and nails, it will go away after a few washes. If, on the other hand, the product dirties your clothes, towel or shirt, know that the stains could be indelible.
Step 2. Wash your hair very well
Before dyeing they must be very clean, otherwise there is a risk of not taking. Use a good amount of shampoo, but don't use conditioner, as it may have the effect of making your hair impervious to the dye.
Step 3. Blend the dye components
Not all dyes require this step, but if yours does, follow the instructions on the package. To mix the various components, use a plastic bowl and a special paint brush, always following the instructions on the box.
If your dye does not require this step, it is still a good idea to transfer the dye to a plastic bowl, to dose it and apply it to your hair more easily
Step 4. Apply the dye to your hair
When you're ready to apply the dye, divide your hair into sections. It is best to collect half of the top hair with a clip and start dyeing the lower strands first.
- Distribute the dye evenly throughout the hair using your fingertips or brush. Start at the roots and work your way up to the tips.
- Some dyes recommend massaging the product into the hair until it produces a light foam. Check the instructions if you have to do it too.
Step 5. Let the dye work for as long as necessary
After you've spread the dye all over your hair, put on a shower cap or wrap your hair in plastic wrap and set a timer. The shutter speed depends on the type of tint you are using. Some brands provide a shutter speed of up to half an hour, while others do not exceed 15 minutes.
Check your watch so you don't risk letting it act for too long
Step 6. Rinse your hair
When the allotted time has passed, rinse your hair thoroughly until the water runs clean. For rinsing try to use only cold or barely warm water. Hot water may remove some of the color, which would make it less bright in this way.
After rinsing, dry your hair with a towel. Do not use drying systems such as a hairdryer, straightener, helmet or hot curlers, because the heat damages the hair and tends to make the dye run
Part 3 of 3: Extend the Life of the Tint
Step 1. As soon as you have finished dyeing your hair, rinse with vinegar
To maximize the duration of the color and to make it brighter, you can rinse your hair with a mixture of water and white wine vinegar in equal parts. Pour one cup of water and one cup of vinegar into a medium-sized bowl. Then pour this mixture into your hair. Let it sit for a couple of minutes and then rinse well.
Step 2. Wash your hair less frequently
The less frequently you wash, the longer your color will last. If possible, try not to wash your hair more often than twice a week. To ensure that your hair always stays clean between washes, use a dry shampoo.
- When washing your hair, try to use only cold or barely warm water.
- It is also useful to follow the application of the conditioner with a jet of very cold water to close the pores and to prevent the color from going away.
Step 3. Avoid all hot drying systems (hairdryer, straightener, helmet, hot curlers)
The heat drips the dye and makes it go away more quickly. To prevent this possibility, try never to use a drying system that involves the use of heat, such as a hairdryer, a straightener and hot curlers.
- If you really need to dry your hair or want to blow dry your hair, set the hair dryer on cold or hot air, but not hot.
- If you want to curl them, try wearing sponge curlers before going to bed instead of a curling iron or hot curlers. This way you will have wavy hair without the need to use heat.
Step 4. Re-dye every three to four weeks
Blue dyes are often semi-permanent and tend to fade quickly - you may notice that the color fades as the weeks go by. To keep your bright, vibrant blue you will need to re-dye every three to four weeks.

Warnings
- Never mix the bleach with the dye! It could cause a dangerous chemical reaction.
- Use only plastic, glass or ceramic bowls for dye and bleach.
- Some dyes contain a chemical called paraphenylenediamine, which can cause allergic reactions in some people. Before doing the dye, always do an epicutaneous test, applying the product on a flap of skin, especially if you already know that it contains this substance.
