You don't have to jump through hoops to find a good skin care product. In fact, some of the best ingredients are often found in the kitchen! Coconut oil is a prime example. Rich in moisturizing and therapeutic properties, it is excellent for treating rashes, dryness and skin flaking. Instead of spending a fortune on lotion, why not make it at home? The process is surprisingly simple and the results are fantastic.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Prepare a Lotion with a Hand blender
Step 1. Pour 1 cup (200g) of coconut oil into a bowl
Make sure it's solid, preferably straight out of the fridge. If coconut oil is soft, it cannot be beaten well.
Step 2. If desired, add 1 teaspoon of vitamin E oil
If you can't find a bottle of vitamin E oil, you can use the capsule (you will need about 4). Pierce or open the capsules, then empty them into the bowl.
Step 3. If desired, add 10 or 15 drops of essential oil
While not strictly necessary, it allows you to perfume the lotion. You can use just one or mix several to get a unique and personalized fragrance.
Step 4. Beat the oil on full power for 6 to 7 minutes using a blender
From time to time pick it up from the sides of the bowl. Keep stirring until you get a light, fluffy and airy consistency.
The oil could whip up until stiff (assuming a consistency similar to that of butter cream icing) or become smooth and homogeneous, this depends on the initial temperature
Step 5. Pour the oil into a glass jar
Pour the oil into a glass jar with a capacity of about 250 ml with the help of a rubber spatula. You can also divide it into 2 x 120ml jars. Store it at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
Method 2 of 3: Make a Refreshing Lotion
Step 1. Beat ½ cup (100g) of coconut oil
Pour ½ cup (100 g) of solid coconut oil into a bowl. Beat it on maximum power for 6 or 9 minutes with a blender until you get a soft and light consistency.
Step 2. Add 2 tablespoons (30ml) of aloe vera gel
This ingredient helps to obtain a refreshing and soothing lotion. Make sure you are using 100% pure gel, with no added ingredients. Some preservatives are acceptable, but avoid carrageenan, flavoring oils, parabens, polysorbate 20, and retinyl palmitate.
Step 3. If desired, add up to 12 drops of essential oil
You can use a single fragrance or combine several to obtain a unique and personalized fragrance. If you want the lotion to be even more refreshing, try basil, eucalyptus, lemon, lemongrass, or peppermint.
Peppermint oil is very strong. Start with using just a few drops, then add more if you wish
Step 4. Blend the ingredients lightly
You can use a whisk or fork, but don't mix them for too long, or the coconut oil will soften excessively and not be airy enough. Your goal should be to get a homogeneous compound, without streaks or helical curves.
Step 5. Pour the lotion into a glass jar using a rubber spatula
You can use one 250ml or two 120ml bowl. Store at room temperature. If the lotion starts to soften, put it in the fridge.
Method 3 of 3: Make a Simple Lotion
Step 1. Heat coconut oil and emulsifying wax in the microwave
Pour 130 g of coconut oil and 45 g of emulsifying wax into a microwave-safe bowl. Heat them for 2 minutes or until melted.
You can also reheat them in a water bath
Step 2. Bring the water to a boil
Pour 500ml of distilled water into a saucepan. Bring it to a boil, then remove it from the stove.
Step 3. Mix the water, oil, wax and glycerin
Pour the hot water into the oil and wax solution, then add 250ml of glycerin. Stir with a whisk or spoon until you get a homogeneous color and consistency.
Step 4. If desired, add an essential oil
Try to use 10 or 15 drops. You can choose a single fragrance or mix several to obtain a unique scent.
Step 5. Pour the lotion into the jars
Divide it between several 120ml jars, then pour the remaining lotion into a larger container for storage. Keep the smaller containers in the bathroom, while the large one in the fridge.
If you live in a particularly hot place, keep them all in the fridge
Advice
- Use jars with a wide opening, this will make the product easier to pick up.
- Essential oils can be found online and in stores that sell natural products. You can try to use the specific ones to perfume soap bars, while avoiding those for candles: they are in fact very different products.
- If you live in a warm place, the lotion may soften. Move it to a cooler room or put it in the fridge.
- The lotion made by whipping coconut oil can initially grease the skin, but once the skin gets used to it, you will have no more problems.
- If the recipe calls for solid coconut oil and what you have is too soft, put the jar in the fridge for a few hours.
- You can use an electric hand mixer instead of a blender. Avoid using blenders or food processors, as they can overheat the oil.
- Choose an unrefined, untreated cold-pressed coconut oil, as it has far more beneficial properties than processed coconut oil.
