Treadmills are great training tools that suffer considerable wear over the years. They are built to withstand the repeated impact of a running person but, like all complex equipment, they can show various malfunctions. Instead of buying a new one, consider repairing the treadmill yourself. Try one of the methods described in this tutorial.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Power Problems
Step 1. Check for any electricity connection problems
The easiest way to solve this problem, which is perhaps the most common, is to make sure the plug is plugged in. Make sure that the machine is connected to the electrical system and that the pins of the plug are not bent or deformed.
Step 2. Check that the electricity is reaching the outlet to which the treadmill is connected
Insert the plug of the machine into several sockets, to rule out the first one is faulty. If you don't have another power plug nearby, try connecting another device, such as a lamp, to the potentially faulty one, and verify that it is receiving electricity.
- If you know which sockets are connected to the various circuits in your home, try one powered by another circuit.
- If the power outlet is not electrified, then reset the main switch or replace any damaged fuses before trying to start the treadmill again.
Step 3. Check the connections between the power adapter and the machine
Some treadmill models need a transformer that changes the electrical current before it reaches the motor. Check that it is well positioned and connected properly.
In some cases, you will need to open the treadmill to do this. If this is your case, remember to remove the plug from the socket before opening the electrical box
Step 4. Disconnect the appliance from the electrical system
In order to check for other problems, the first thing to do is to disconnect the power supply for safety reasons.
Step 5. Check the car fuses
If some are burned, then the treadmill is not working. Fortunately, these are simple items to replace. You can test the fuses with a multimeter or take them to an electronics store and have them checked.
If these elements are burned out, remember to replace them with identical amperage spares
Step 6. Determine if the problem is in the display
If the treadmill does not start, in reality it may just be the monitor that does not turn on. Make sure that all wiring between the control panel and the machine is secure.
Also check that electricity is coming to the monitor. You can do this with a multimeter connected to the display and the current input point
Step 7. Call a technician
If you cannot find the cause of the fault following the previous advice, then you must rely on a professional.
If possible, contact the manufacturer for more information on the diagnostic processes and the list of authorized technicians in your area
Method 2 of 3: Walking Belt Problems
Step 1. Try to troubleshoot this item
Evaluate whether it is a malfunction of the belt itself or a mechanical failure of the pulleys and the crankshaft.
Recognizing these kinds of problems will help you in the next step. If the fault is at the level of the tape, then you may even be able to fix it yourself without much difficulty. If the problem lies with the motor or pulleys, then it will be difficult for you to intervene without professional help
Step 2. Disconnect the machine from the power supply
When proceeding with repairs on the treadmill, it is always very important to disconnect the electricity to avoid sudden starts and possible injuries.
Step 3. Clean the surface of the ribbon
Spray a cloth with detergent and wipe it all over the walking belt. Dirt and dust accumulate on this part of the treadmill and can slow it down. In addition, the particles can fall inside the machine causing problems to the moving parts.
- Start by cleaning the top of the tape and pull it down firmly to make it rotate and scrub the entire surface.
- Remember to thoroughly dry the belt before using the treadmill again. A wet surface is also slippery and you could get hurt.
Step 4. Align the ribbon
Adjust its position so that it is centered in the machine. After a lot of use, this part of the treadmill becomes loose and may tip to one side. You can try to reposition it from the outside by pulling it from the diagonal side.
If the problem is serious enough, you will need to call a technician
Step 5. Lubricate the tape
If you notice that it doesn't flow well when you run, then you may be able to fix the problem with some lube. In this way you reduce friction and extend the life of the belt.
Purchase a specific or silicone lubricant. Spray a thin layer between the tape and the platform below. For more details see the maintenance manual of your model
Step 6. Check the speed sensor
This element helps the tape move. If the ribbon jerks or does not increase in speed, then the sensor may be dirty or detached.
The sensor is generally located inside the platform, near the belt. Consult your treadmill manual for more details
Step 7. Replace the ribbon
If the suggestions listed above have not eliminated the problems, you may need to change the element. Order the replacement part directly from the manufacturer if you want to replace it yourself. Remember to order the right piece for your model.
It is recommended to contact a specialized technician to change the ribbon
Method 3 of 3: Engine Problems
Step 1. Exclude that there are different faults
Engine damage is one of the most expensive to fix, so be sure to rule out any other possibilities before focusing on this piece.
Step 2. Check the error codes that appear on the control panel using the manual
These should be able to make you understand the type of fault.
The manual will also tell you if it is a problem that you can solve yourself or if you necessarily need a technician
Step 3. Open the device with a screwdriver, following the instructions in the manual
Inspect the connections. If you are not an expert, this may not lead to any results. If you don't notice anything clearly damaged or wrong, then you need to call a professional.
Remember that if you open the motor cover of the treadmill you will most likely void the warranty. If your machine is still covered by the manufacturer's warranty, it is best to take it to a repair shop or call a qualified technician
Step 4. Replace the motor
Consider this solution only if you have a lot of experience with electric motors and are able to read electronic diagrams.
Treadmill motors are available at sporting goods stores that sell these machines and also online
Warnings
- Do not work on a treadmill while it is still connected to electricity. You could be electrocuted or the car could move unexpectedly.
- If the treadmill emits smoke or smells of burning, stop using it immediately and unplug it from the electrical outlet.
- Never use a treadmill that isn't running well.
- Do not open the engine if you do not want to lose the manufacturer's warranty.
