A nice, warm knitted blanket goes perfectly with a good book on a rushed night …
A blanket is a long-term project, but you can create one when you have the time and the desire. Plus, the sense of fulfillment once the blanket is complete will be worth it!
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Patchwork Blanket
Step 1. Learn to knit, to cast on the stitches and a quit the job if you don't already know how to do it.
You may also find it helpful to learn how to purl.
Step 2. Choose the size of the patches
Between 12 and 15cm is a good enough choice - they are big enough for you to work on for a while and the blanket will look interesting right away!
Step 3. Choose the size of the blanket and think about how many squares it will be wide
Step 4. Start knitting your squares
Try to make them all the exact size you have chosen as much as possible to make assembly easier. Use whatever wool / yarn you like - you can use a skein you have leftover, experiment with stripe patterns or different types of stitch. Keep in mind that your blanket will look better with no purl sides - think carefully about using purl stitches.
Step 5. When you have enough squares, sew them together side by side to create a row
At this point, you will realize how important it is that the measurement of the squares is as accurate as possible - mismatched sizes can result in a weird texture.
Step 6. Sew to knit and assemble another row, then sew the two rows together for the long side
Step 7. Continue
Each time you finish a line, merge it with the previous one. When your blanket has reached the desired length you can stop.
Method 2 of 3: Plain Blanket
Step 1. Start 150 stitches
Step 2. Work in garter stitch for 5 cm
Step 3. Knit 20, purl 110, knit 20
Step 4. Work 20 stitches, work 110, then 20 more
Step 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the piece measures just under the desired length
Step 6. Knit approximately another 5 cm
Step 7. Close the job
Method 3 of 3: Banded Blanket
Step 1. Start 20 points; more if you use a faster afghan stitch, less for more complex work
Step 2. Knit the desired width of the blanket, close the work
Step 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2, alternating between two colors, until you have enough bands for the entire blanket, about 10 (more or less, if you change the needles and the width of the bands)
Step 4. Sew the bands together (make sure they are straight when sewing, otherwise the blanket will be twisted)
Step 5. Add fringes (optional)
Advice
- Choose the right size for your knitting needles so that they fit the type of yarn you use.
- If you have leftover fabric swatches that are the same size as the squares you are knitting, add them!
- Make sure the colors match and don't make things too complicated.
- Dare! Fancy yarns look good when paired with just about anything!
- You can also do it with a friend. One person knits a square, band or row and so does the other!
- For the patchwork blanket you can use a knitted blanket, scarf or pillowcase.
