Bedspreads are quilted, blanket-like bed coverings that are not only used for warming, but are also an integral part of a bedroom's décor. The bedspreads give an aesthetic touch to the room because they decorate the bed, which is generally the most relevant feature of the bedroom. Sometimes referred to as duvets or blankets, bedspreads come in a huge variety of thicknesses, sizes, colors and patterns. If you want a one-of-a-kind bed cover that perfectly matches your tastes and your home decor, then you can make one yourself. You don't need to have a lot of experience in pattern design or sewing. Even a beginner can design and sew a bedspread by following these steps.
Steps
Step 1. Decide what kind of bedspread to make
Do you want a bedspread, a duvet or a quilt? The difference between one choice and another lies in the thickness and size.
- A traditional bedspread is large enough to cover the entire bed, generally extends to the floor, and has a medium thickness.
- The duvets are thicker bedspreads and cover only the mattress, allowing you to complement the cover with a ruffle for the bed.
- Quilts are thin bedspreads that cover only the mattress and are often used as an intermediate layer between sheets and bedspreads, or as the main cover for the bed in the warmer months.
Step 2. Take your measurements
Use a tape measure, find the length and width of the intended coating. Keep in mind the distance you want to leave between the bedspread or duvet and the floor, and add extra seam space at the edges.
Step 3. Determine the thickness of your bedspread
This will affect the choice of the type of padding. Keep in mind that if you want to make a duvet, you will need double the filling, while, to make a quilt, you will not need any kind of filling.
Step 4. Choose your fabrics
You will need a front fabric, which will be visible, and a back one.
Step 5. Make sure you have all the material, and everything in the right amount, before you start sewing a bedspread
Step 6. Make the front (front) and back of your bedspread from the selected fabrics
This could mean that you need to attach 2 or more pieces of fabric together.
Step 7. Sew the front and back of your bedspread together
Join the 2 pieces on the inside and topstitch all around 3 sides, leaving one end open.
Step 8. Prepare the batting
For large thick bedspreads or duvets, you'll probably need to string several cotton balls together to get the size and thickness you want and then shorten them to the right size. If you're making a quilt, skip the steps involving wadding.
Step 9. Secure the batting to the side that is now on the outside of the bedspread
By hand, roughly sew the corners of the wadding square that you created at the corners of the back fabric. Be careful not to sew the wadding onto both the front and back fabric, otherwise you won't be able to turn the bedspread to the other side.
Step 10. Reverse the bedspread on the open end
You will need to tidy up the wadding and both sides of the bedspread to align everything to finish the job.
Step 11. Fold the front and back fabric of the open end inwards, thus hiding the raw edges
Step 12. Pin the open end to complete
Step 13. Sew and close the open end
Make sure the seam is as close to the corner as possible.
Step 14. Secure the batting
To do this, sew all around the entire outer perimeter of the bedspread, making sure to include the batting. It is a good idea to sew the inside of the bedspread to better secure the wadding using pre-made patterns that can be purchased.
Advice
- If you want to make a reversible bedspread, leave the back fabric alone and choose two front fabrics instead.
- Use chalk pencils or erasable ink fabric markers to make marks on the fabric as needed.
- Brush up on basic sewing techniques to ensure your work runs smoothly.
