Supermarket ready-to-use icing is cheap and super easy to make, but it may not have the texture, taste, or color you want. Fortunately, you can customize it in many ways. For example, adding a syrup, powdered sugar, or food coloring are just a few ways you can perfect your ready-made icing. With a few simple variations, the ready-to-use icing can become the perfect and quick decoration for all your desserts.

Method 1 of 3: Enhance the Flavor of the Ready-to-Use Icing
Step 1. Flavor the glaze with the syrup
Pour the ready-to-use icing into a large bowl, then add a teaspoon (5ml) of your favorite syrup. You can choose from many flavors: caramel, raspberry, hazelnut, cherry, mint, mango. Incorporate the syrup into the glaze by mixing it by hand or with the hand blender. When the ingredients are well blended, taste the glaze and see if you need to add more syrup.
Step 2. Add cream cheese to give it a richer taste
Pour the glaze into a large bowl and add 250 g of cream cheese. Combine the two ingredients by mixing them by hand or with the hand blender. The glaze will have an even richer flavor and an incredibly creamy texture.
Step 3. Enhance the flavor of the glaze with a food extract
Pour it into a large bowl and add half a teaspoon (2.5 ml) of a food extract of your choice. You can choose between different flavors, such as vanilla, orange or chocolate. Incorporate the extract by mixing the glaze by hand or with the hand blender. When the ingredients are well blended, taste the glaze and see if it has a strong enough taste or if you need to add more extract.
Step 4. Use whipped cream to fix too sweet icing
Pour the glaze into a bowl and add 250 g of whipped cream. Mix the two ingredients by hand or with the hand blender. In addition to correcting the excessive sweetness, the whipped cream will make the icing much softer and lighter.
Step 5. Flavor the icing with a fruit juice
Pour it into a large bowl and add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of fruit juice. You can also use fresh juice from a freshly squeezed citrus fruit, such as lemon or lime. Incorporate it into the glaze by mixing it by hand or with the hand blender. When the ingredients are well blended, taste the glaze and see if you need to add more juice.
Method 2 of 3: Correct the Consistency of the Ready-to-Use Icing
Step 1. Add a tablespoon of powdered sugar if you want to thicken the glaze
Pour it into a large bowl and add 1 tablespoon (15 g) of powdered sugar. Incorporate the sugar into the glaze by mixing it by hand or with a hand blender. When the ingredients are well blended, taste the glaze and see if it has the correct density or if you need to add more icing sugar.
Step 2. If the icing is too thick, you can dilute it with milk
After pouring it into a bowl, add half a teaspoon of milk. Stir with the hand or hand blender until the icing has incorporated the milk. If it still feels too thick, add another half a teaspoon.

Step 3. Whip the icing if you want it to be softer and lighter in texture
Transfer it to a large bowl and whisk it with a hand or electric whisk until it has doubled in volume. At that point, stop whipping, otherwise you risk lumps forming.
Method 3 of 3: Change the Color of the Ready-to-Use Icing
Step 1. Pour the icing into a large bowl
Keep a small amount of frosting in a bowl and set aside. You can use it to correct the final color if it is too dark.
Step 2. Add the food coloring
You can use one or more colors. Food colors of natural origin are to be preferred over artificial ones. Incorporate a few drops into the glaze by mixing it by hand or with a hand blender. Keep in mind that 100 drops of food coloring equals approximately one teaspoon (5ml).
- To color the pink glaze, add 11 drops of red food coloring and 3 drops of yellow food coloring.
- To make the lavender frosting, use 5 drops of blue food coloring and 5 drops of red food coloring.
- For a mint green frosting, add 3 drops of blue food coloring and 3 drops of green food coloring.
Step 3. Refine the color if necessary
If you've gotten too dark a shade, add some of the white frosting you kept aside. If it's too light, add a couple more drops of food coloring. Mix well and continue like this until the frosting is the desired color.
