Microsoft's new console, Xbox One, has been designed to be exploited to its full potential when connected to the internet. All updates released by Microsoft are normally downloaded and installed without the user having to intervene. However, you can always change the console settings so that updates are downloaded manually. This guide also provides a section on troubleshooting problems with installing new updates.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Automatic Update
Step 1. Enable "Instant Power On" mode
The Xbox One has been designed to be connected to the internet at all times and the "Instant on" mode ensures that all new updates are downloaded and installed automatically. To enable this mode of operation, the console must be connected to the internet.
- Go to the "Home" screen of the dashboard.
- Press the controller's "Menu" button.
- Choose the "Settings" item, then select the "Power and Startup" option.
- Set the "Power Saving Mode" item to "Immediate Power On".
- Make sure the "Download updates and purchase automatically" checkbox is checked.
Step 2. At the end of the game session turn off your Xbox One
When the "Immediate Power On" mode is active, the console is not completely powered off, it is in a power saving state. In this mode, the console is able to check for new updates and, if necessary, to install them automatically.
Step 3. When you wish, start the Xbox One as you normally do
Most updates require no user intervention. However, in some cases, you will be prompted to confirm the installation of certain updates after the boot is complete.
Method 2 of 3: Manual Update
Step 1. Make sure the console is connected to the Xbox Live service
The only way to update your operating system or installed content is through the Xbox Live platform. Select this link for more information on how to connect the console to the internet.
If you don't have a web connection, you can contact Microsoft technical support or visit the website for more information on how to manually install the update file. In the case of important updates, such as the operating system, they may provide you with installation files to download and install manually through the use of a USB stick. This type of service is offered only to users who cannot connect the console to the internet
Step 2. Enter the "Settings" menu
If "Instant On" mode is not active, or if the ability to download an update comes up while you are using the console, you can install the update manually via the "Settings" menu. This menu is accessible from the "Home" screen.
Updates are released in two forms: "Available" and "Mandatory". Available updates are available for download at your discretion and are not required to connect to the Xbox Live service. After a certain period of time, these updates become "Required", which means that they must be installed on the console in order to connect to the Xbox Live service. If an update has become mandatory, the system updates screen will automatically appear when the console is started. In this case, you will not be able to connect to the Xbox Live service until this update has been successfully installed
Step 3. Select the "System" item in the "Settings" menu
Step 4. Choose the "Console Information and Updates" option
If there is a new update, the "Time to update" screen will be displayed. The size in MB of the file to be downloaded will be displayed on the screen.
Step 5. To start the installation process, select the "Start Update" item, then press the "A" button on the controller
This update will be downloaded and installed automatically. The console may automatically restart at the end or during the installation process.
However, if you do not wish to install the update, select the "Disconnect and close" item. The console will be disconnected from the Xbox Live service, but you will still be able to use it for offline activities (gaming, listening to music, playing videos and Blu-Ray, etc.). However, you will not be able to play online multiplayer until you install all required system updates
Method 3 of 3: Troubleshooting
Step 1. The "Xbox almost full" message appears during the update
This message should only appear if you are updating a video game or application. Operating system updates do not generate errors related to the amount of space available on the hard drive.
- Go to the "My games and apps" menu.
- Select the video game, application or trailer you no longer want to use.
- Press the "Menu" button on the controller, then select the "Uninstall" item.
- After freeing up enough hard disk space, try to upgrade again.
Step 2. During the update, the message "There was a problem with the update" appears
Normally this message appears when there are problems with the internet connection and can be displayed on the screen before, during or after the update.
- Make sure your console is connected to the internet, then try to download the update again.
- If the problem persists, turn off the console completely, then unplug the power cord for about 30 seconds. After the indicated time has elapsed, reconnect the console to the power supply and restart it, then try to install the update again.
- If that doesn't fix the problem, try using the "Offline System Update Diagnostic Tool". This is a file that can be downloaded from the Microsoft website via this link. You will also be given all the instructions to perform the installation. You will need to use a USB stick that has a capacity of at least 2GB and is formatted with an NTFS file system. Performing this procedure on Xbox One takes a great deal of time.
